THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KAPTEYN'S STAR

KAPTEYN'S STAR is a junction system that does not make anything, does not grow anything, and does not need to, because everything made and grown in the western corridor passes through it anyway.

The Smoothest Junction in the West

Three apertures. One between here and Ross 154, one between here and Hansestadt, one pointing outward to Port Mäkelä on a quiet spur. The alien gate builders, who had opinions about topology that they did not explain to anyone, placed this system precisely where a transit economy could thrive without producing a single thing of inherent value. The Wave 4 founders recognized this and sensibly did not try to be something else. They built bunkering, warehousing, crew facilities, and documentation offices, and they have been collecting fees on everything the western branch moves ever since.

The character of the place is professional without being impersonal. Gate Corp maintains one of its larger western bases here — enough staff to nearly match the civilian population in the transit district — and has rotated people through from across the Reach for long enough that Kapteyn's Star has absorbed traces of everywhere while remaining distinctly itself. The Dutch astronomer whose catalog the system still carries would have appreciated the precision of it.

The Merchant Assembly Trade Mission

Hansestadt's Merchant Assembly has maintained a trade mission here for nearly two centuries. Not because Kapteyn's Star is politically interesting, but because whoever frames the commercial terms at a junction between two major nodes eventually shapes what crosses it. The mission's staff know the Gate Corp scheduling supervisors by name. They have known their predecessors by name. They have been building this particular relationship, continuously, since before anyone currently working in the transit district was born.

The scheduling data is public. What the data shows, if you cross-reference transit wait times by operator affiliation over the past three decades, is that independent operators running deep-west routes report measurably longer aperture queues than Merchant Assembly-affiliated freight on comparable volumes. The Gate Corporation has reviewed four formal grievances about this in thirty years. All four were resolved in favor of the scheduling authority's discretion.

The Merchant Assembly trade mission does not comment on the grievance outcomes. It does not need to.

Practical Information

Kapteyn's Star is four hops from Gateway and three apertures wide. Food comes primarily from Solheim, routed through Caldwell Point and Ross 154. The M0V primary is stable and unremarkable, which is exactly what a junction system needs from its star. The transit district has good food, acceptable accommodation, and the cosmopolitan texture of a community that has been absorbing short-term arrivals for generations.
