THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SOLHEIM
SOLHEIM is the western corridor's sunlit exception — a genuine G2 subgiant burning warm and yellow against a backdrop of red and orange M-dwarfs — and the founding generation named it honestly, which is rarer than it sounds.
The Light
Arriving at Solheim from almost any direction along the western branch involves a small recalibration of the eyes. The sky is actually blue. The growing season is actually long. The soil, absent genetic modification, actually produces things. Wave 3 settlers who surveyed this system and called it "sun-home" were not being aspirational; they were being descriptive. The subsequent six generations who have farmed here have been correct to feel that they landed somewhere good.
The crops reflect it. Grain varieties, field agriculture, biological feedstocks that the inner corridor buys in quantity. Grünfeld grows fungi. Brennan's Drift grows ore. Solheim grows food, and the western corridor eats it.
The Contract
There is a food supply contract between Solheim's agricultural processing sector and MVG that has been in continuous renewal for one hundred and twenty years. The terms are not public. The families who negotiated the original arrangement are still present — several of them significantly long-lived, carrying the decision forward in person. They sit on the council. They have always sat on the council. The council is genuinely democratic; elections happen and outcomes are accepted, but the pool from which candidates emerge has been narrow for six generations, and the pool has a collective memory that is institutionally allergic to examining the contract's terms competitively.
An analysis of what the current food market would yield against what MVG's renewal rates have provided would be straightforward to commission. It would constitute a judgment on the founding families' work. The founding families are still present to receive that judgment. The analysis has not been commissioned.
The Veil Institute maintains a small research station studying agricultural adaptation to subgiant irradiation. The data does not go to the local university. This is normal for the Institute and everyone here has stopped noticing it.
Practical Information
Solheim is four hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Caldwell Point and Dokkum. The loop position makes it a reliable food supplier to both neighbors. The G2IV classification carries a caveat about stellar evolution that the system's governance has been informed of and has not read: the star is leaving the main sequence. In hundreds of millions of years the habitable zone will shift. This is not a planning concern. The asterisk in the commission's filed projections is not a planning concern. The council has other things to consider.
