Altgrund

GJ 189 | M-type | deep_frontier

The name means "old ground," which is what four hundred years of continuous settlement produces. Altgrund predates the Compact, predates the Commission, predates most of the institutional architecture that later arrivals took for granted. The founding cohort was not fleeing anything — they arrived before there was anything to flee from. But their age has made them a destination for people who came later with exactly that motivation, and the community has the cultural layering that four centuries of successive arrivals produces.

Supply Dependency

Altgrund produces a modest agricultural surplus and exports it toward the inner corridor. Four centuries of settled M-dwarf agriculture has produced a mature system: worked soil, established cultivars, irrigation infrastructure built and rebuilt across multiple generations. The community has never needed to import food. The reverse is true — Altgrund has periodically served as a supply point for communities further out along the Germanic deep frontier corridor.

The dependency is in the direction of industrial goods and, more than anything, communication relay maintenance. Altgrund's position at hop 8 places it at the edge of reliable high-bandwidth communication with the inner Reach. Maintaining the relay infrastructure that keeps Altgrund connected to the corridor network is an ongoing capital expense. The community takes it seriously; four centuries of institutional experience have taught them that deep frontier isolation compounds quickly once communication links degrade.

Faction Notes

Altgrund is old enough to have developed its own institutional structures that predate every formal faction in the Reach. The community's governance framework was established before the Concord Assembly existed in its current form, before the Lattice Commission's mandate was formalized, before the Compact of Westphalia was founded. The community has lived through the creation of all of these institutions as an external observer rather than a participant in their founding. This gives Altgrund's leadership a particular quality of institutional perspective — they have seen other communities' institutions arise, grow, and sometimes overreach, and they have managed their relationships with those institutions accordingly.

The Compact of Westphalia's affiliated communities regard Altgrund as an elder system — a founding reference point for German-heritage deep frontier settlement that is technically outside the Compact's mutual recognition framework but culturally central to its self-understanding. Relations are warm and practically non-binding.

The Lattice Commission's Altgrund presence is compliant and formal. Four centuries of compliance history give the community an extremely clean record. The Commission treats Altgrund as a model system and has not looked closely at the details of what that compliance actually covers.

What Altgrund does not discuss with outsiders: the terms on which successive waves of crisis refugees were integrated, and what those communities gave up in exchange for settlement rights.

The community has absorbed at least four separate cohorts of crisis refugees over four centuries — people arriving in disrupted circumstances, without resources, needing settlement rights quickly. Integration has always been successful in the sense that the community has remained stable. What "integration" required in each case — which arriving practices were maintained, which were abandoned, what commitments the arriving cohorts made about governance participation and community precedence — is documented in Altgrund's archives but not discussed. The descendants of those arriving cohorts are fully integrated now. The terms of their integration are, for most of them, unknown. Altgrund's oldest families know. They don't raise the subject.

Calibration Note

Wave_2 settlement at hop 8 is an apparent anomaly. Wave_2 communities are typically found within hops 1-5 of Gateway; Altgrund's hop 8 position is an artifact of how hop distance is calculated. In the wave_2 era, Gateway was not yet the canonical hub from which all distances were measured — settlement expeditions launched from multiple staging points along what later became the corridor. Altgrund's founding cohort reached GJ 189 via a shorter route from an earlier hub. When Gateway's administrative authority was established and hop-distances were standardized from that single point, Altgrund and communities like it found themselves formally reclassified as deeper-frontier than their four hundred years of continuous settlement suggested. The community had not moved. The map had changed around them. Wave_2 at hop 8 is therefore correct: the hop distance is current-map accurate, and the wave designation reflects when the community was actually founded. The apparent contradiction is the setting, not an error.
