THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ALTGRUND
ALTGRUND is four hundred years old, which in the deep frontier means it was here before most of the institutions that now have opinions about it were invented, and has developed a quality of institutional patience that those institutions tend to find disorienting.
Before the Architecture Existed
The founding cohort arrived in the wave_2 era — before the Concord Assembly existed in its current form, before the Lattice Commission's mandate was formalized, before the Compact of Westphalia was founded. They built governance structures suited to what they were doing: farming an M-dwarf habitable world at distance, managing a community that would be a long way from any external assistance for an indefinite period.
When the formal institutional architecture of the Reach was subsequently constructed around them, Altgrund did not participate in founding those institutions. It had its own institutions already. The community watched the Concord Assembly's formation, the Commission's expansion, the Compact's establishment, as an external observer rather than a participant. What the Compact's affiliated communities regard as the founding reference point for Germanic deep frontier settlement — the tradition they inherit — Altgrund regards as a younger institution that has correctly identified its inheritance. The distinction matters to Altgrund in the way that birth order matters within families: politely, consistently, and whenever it becomes relevant.
Relations with the Compact are warm and practically non-binding. The Commission's Altgrund compliance record is extremely clean. The Commission treats Altgrund as a model system and has not looked closely at what that compliance actually covers.
Four Centuries of Recordkeeping
The Compact's founding documents cite Altgrund's governance structure as a precedent. Altgrund's archives contain four centuries of governance decisions, community records, and institutional history that predate everything the Compact is citing as foundational. The archives are maintained with the particular care that a community gives to records that have survived long enough to become significant: climate-controlled storage, redundant copies across multiple facilities, an archivist position that has been continuously filled since the community's second generation.
Access to the archives is available to community members. Requests from outside parties are evaluated individually. Approval is selective. The selection criteria are not published.
The Commission's institutional historians have requested access three times in the past century. Each request was received, acknowledged, and declined without explanation. The community is not required to explain, and it does not.
What Four Cohorts of Refugees Agreed To
Altgrund has integrated four separate cohorts of crisis refugees across four centuries — people arriving in disrupted circumstances, without resources, needing settlement rights quickly. The integration has, in each case, been successful in the sense that the community remained stable. What integration required — which arriving practices were maintained, which were abandoned, what commitments the arriving cohorts made about governance participation, resource allocation, and community precedence — is documented in the archives. The descendants of those arriving cohorts are fully integrated now. Most of them do not know the terms under which their founders settled. The community they live in is the community those terms produced, which means the terms are legible in the social structure if you know what you are looking at. Most residents do not know what they are looking at, because they grew up in the social structure and it feels like the natural arrangement of things.
The community's oldest families know the terms. This knowledge is held with the quiet authority that comes from being the ones who made the deal rather than the ones who arrived into it. They do not raise the subject, because raising it would require explaining what was asked of people who came desperate and accepted conditions that the current generation would consider unfair, and explaining that would require deciding what to do about it, and deciding what to do about it would require consensus from a community whose current composition reflects the original terms. The terms are stable because no one with standing to challenge them knows they exist.
Practical Information
Altgrund is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 174 (Tiefenbach) and GJ 675 (Neugrund). Agricultural surplus is available. The communication relay infrastructure receives significant maintenance attention — four centuries of institutional experience have taught the community that deep frontier isolation compounds quickly once communication links degrade. Outside visitors are received with the particular hospitality of a place that has seen many kinds of visitor over four centuries and has calibrated its expectations accordingly.
