THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — WATERKANT
WATERKANT is a farming corridor system so settled into its own routines that the Commission liaison holds an office in the transit node and has not been asked for anything in recent memory.
The Waterside
The name means waterside in Afrikaans, and it fits. The habitable world is low and wet, wide floodplains drawing long shadows under M-dwarf rust-orange light. Two hundred years of settlement have turned the original homestead plots into established agri-communes of the kind that barely need managing because everyone already knows their role. The Landbou Raad — the informal agricultural cooperative council — predates any formal Commission presence by over a century. It handles resource allocation, boundary arbitration, and settlement licensing. The Commission's local liaison is politely tolerated.
Waterkant feeds the outposts deeper in the Cairn pocket extension: processed grain, preserved protein cultures, and basic fabrication stock moving forward along the corridor toward Breëvlei and Stilwater. Return traffic is thin. The economic flow is directional, and the community is organized around production rather than exchange.
Disputes over water rights and field boundaries — the oldest kind of disputes humans carry with them — make up most of the local docket. The system sits at a choke point on the corridor's shared aquifer systems, and the neighboring settlements have long memories about dry years. This is not discussed in Commission correspondence. It is discussed everywhere else.
The Survey Team
Eight months ago, a survey team passed through with credentials that did not match any Commission project register. They were measuring something in the aquifer basin — not agricultural yield, not infrastructure assessment. Nobody on the Landbou Raad knows who sent them. The team completed its work and left. The measurements have not been shared. The Landbou Raad has submitted a query to the Commission's regional office. The regional office acknowledged receipt.
Practical Information
Waterkant is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting inward and toward Breëvlei. The M3V primary produces the corridor's characteristic rust-orange light. The population is small, generationally rooted, and deeply indifferent to anyone in a hurry. The food is local and plentiful. The Commission liaison has a comfortable office.
