THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ASHFIELD
ASHFIELD is named for what the founders saw when they arrived, which was ash, and they were practical people who were not going to pretend otherwise.
The Plains
The F6V star burns warmer and brighter than most in this corridor of dim red dwarfs — warm yellow-white sunlight diffused through volcanic particulate, turning everything slightly golden, the horizon always a shade darker than the zenith. Residents find it beautiful. Visitors often find it oppressive. The ash plains stretch to the horizon: volcanic residue from a geological history that is not fully past. Active vents to the south deposit fresh material annually. The Geological Survey, originally established to monitor volcanic risk, has evolved into something closer to a planning institution, since volcanic activity schedules determine which land can be cleared for agriculture or construction.
Two hundred years ago, the first settlers arrived expecting a waystation between Singh's Landing and whatever lay further out. They found exceptional soil beneath the ash — mineral-rich, uncommonly fertile once cleared. They found that ash-blend clay, fired at specific temperatures, produced an industrial ceramic of unusual density and low porosity. The community that built a waystation found it had also built an industry.
Ashfield ceramics are now exported throughout the adjacent corridor: heavy-use industrial lining materials, architectural facing, and decorative work that commands premium prices at Singh's Landing markets. The Ashfield Ceramics Collective controls the certification marks. Small community. Disproportionate political weight.
The Northern Sector
The Geological Survey's most recent modeling suggests that a dormant vent field in the northern sector may be entering a reactivation cycle. The timeline is measured in decades, not years. The affected land includes approximately a third of the current residential district. The Survey's internal report exists. Its public summary does not mention the residential implications.
A Survey geologist has been quietly selling personal property holdings in the northern sector — acquired over the past decade — to buyers who have no particular reason to understand what they are purchasing.
Practical Information
Ashfield is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Singh's Landing inward and GJ 638. The through-route topology means corridor politics arrive whether invited or not. The Transit Workers' Council advocates for permanent residential infrastructure over throughput optimization; the hub administration periodically disagrees. The Geological Survey holds unusual de facto authority over land use, because the Survey's modeling determines what land exists to use.
The volcanic soil produces remarkable agricultural yields. The ceramics are excellent. The geological outlook is medium-term.
