THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 177
GJ 177 is thoroughly surveyed, adequately habitable, and empty — a combination that the deep frontier produces with some regularity and that says something consistent about the limits of adequacy as a settlement driver.
What the Surveys Found
The survey reports for GJ 177 are thorough and unenthusiastic, which is not a criticism of the survey teams. The teams were professional and careful. The primary world is habitable. Atmospheric composition is adequate. Temperature ranges fall within human tolerance with appropriate infrastructure. Geological stability is good. Water distribution is acceptable. Biodiversity is present.
The surveys note all of this in the standard format, and the standard format makes it clear, through the systematic absence of anything superlative, that nothing here exceeds its parameters in any direction. The world works. It does not exceed working. "Works" and "exceeds working" are what separate an inhabited deep frontier system from an uninhabited corridor node. GJ 177 is on the node side.
The surveys are complete and sufficient and unlikely to be revisited, because revision would require a reason, and the existing record provides no reason to expect different findings. The filing sits in the archive with the particular permanence of a complete answer to a question nobody is currently asking.
The Transit Function
The corridor runs through GJ 177 from GJ 425A to GJ 394. Vessels on that route pass through. The horizon station processes them. The system performs its transit function without comment, which is all it was built to do and all it has been asked to do, and it has been asked to do nothing more because nothing else is here to ask.
Practical Information
GJ 177 is ten hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 425A and GJ 394. No services are available. The habitable world is uninhabited. The relay hardware is operational. The survey files are accessible through the Commission's archive system for any expedition seriously considering whether "adequate" is sufficient.
