THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TIEFENBACH
TIEFENBACH means "deep creek," which is modest, topographic, and the kind of name given by people focused on living in a place rather than describing it — a quality that characterizes Tiefenbach's three centuries of subsequent history with reasonable accuracy.
The Prediction
The founders left the inner Reach during the Secession upheaval. They read the political situation and decided they would rather be elsewhere when it resolved. They were correct: the Secession period was difficult for inner Reach communities in ways that Tiefenbach, at deep frontier distance, did not experience. The community they built was designed from the first year to sustain itself through instability it could not predict and would not be close enough to experience directly — emergency reserve protocols, agricultural self-sufficiency, governance structures sized for a community that cannot count on outside assistance.
Three hundred years later, the descendants of those founders are still here. The emergency protocols are still reviewed each generation. The agricultural self-sufficiency is still maintained. The community is, in practical terms, exactly what the founders intended to build.
The Question That Doesn't Get Answered
Whether the founding decision was prescience or cowardice is a question that each generation of Tiefenbach has addressed and not answered. The founders predicted correctly that the inner Reach was about to become unpleasant. They also left, which meant they were not present for whatever their participation might have changed. Whether a community with Tiefenbach's resources and capabilities should have stayed and engaged with the political outcome rather than withdrawing from it is a question the founding narrative does not raise. The founding narrative celebrates the founders' judgment. The community's private discourse, across three centuries, has been more equivocal.
Nobody discusses this with outside visitors. It is an internal accounting that the community conducts with itself, generation by generation, without resolution. The people of Tiefenbach know the argument in both directions. They do not need it explained by someone passing through.
Compact Affiliation
The Compact of Westphalia's framework covers Tiefenbach nominally. The distance and the community's founding disposition mean that the Compact affiliation is more historical than operational — the community does not call on the Compact for governance functions and the Compact does not impose them. The relationship is warm, distant, and practically unbinding, which suits a community whose founding premise was being unburdened by institutional relationships.
Practical Information
Tiefenbach is nine hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Altgrund and GJ 69. Agricultural goods are available. The Commission's compliance record is clean and infrequently audited. Communication relay infrastructure is maintained with the seriousness that a community founded on the premise of self-sufficiency applies to its one essential external connection.
