THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KAELONG
KAELONG feeds three adjacent corridor systems with a single proprietary grain variety that two centuries of selective development have made extremely good and which no one else can replicate, because the genetic archive that would tell them how is held under trade-secret protections at hop 7, which puts it well outside the range of anyone who might want to litigate the question.
The Agricultural Junction
Wave_2 settlement at hop 7, one of the outer reaches of what that settlement wave would predict. The Vietnamese-heritage founding cooperative picked this K8V star because the habitable world was real agricultural land, not marginal. Two centuries of adapting a cultivated grain variety to the slightly heavy-gravity conditions of Kaelong's habitable body produced something that adjacent corridor systems depend on as a meaningful fraction of their food supply.
The elected council traces its institutional lineage to the founding compact of the Kaelong Agricultural Development Syndicate. The name has drifted over two centuries of local pronunciation until its Vietnamese origin is not obvious to anyone who does not already know it. The founding cooperative's descendants still hold a structural majority on the agricultural resource board. The Assembly is a set of documents that Kaelong's administrators have read and most of them treat as guidance rather than binding obligation.
Three gates, three adjacent systems, and everything that makes this junction work flows through the same grain archive.
The Archive Provision
The genetic archive documenting the cultivar's development history is held under Assembly commercial framework trade-secret provisions that the Syndicate's lawyers have successfully invoked every time the question of public availability has arisen. This is legal. The provisions were designed for commercial competition within a framework of functioning institutions. Their application at hop 7, where the adjacent systems that depend on Kaelong's production have no practical access to the Assembly mediation that would normally govern trade-secret disputes, is a situation the framework's designers probably did not anticipate.
The three dependent systems have noted this. They have not formally raised it, because raising it formally would require Assembly mediation that all parties at hop 7 find inconvenient. The Syndicate's lawyers continue to successfully invoke the provisions. The grain continues to be the only source.
Practical Information
Kaelong is seven hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Tanaka Station, Binh Trang, and Suối Vàng. No Lattice Commission office. No Assembly fleet posting. A registered transit authority and a quarterly compliance filing. The Guardians of Autonomy chapter's energy goes mostly toward a gate fee dispute, which is a real grievance but not the anti-Assembly cause their inner-corridor colleagues prefer them to focus on.
