THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BINH TRANG
BINH TRANG means peaceful embankment, named for the habitable world's prominent river-delta geography, and the community is in fact peaceful, in the way that a community can be peaceful when it controls the food supply for an isolated neighbor and has structured its trade agreement so that prices rise without appearing to rise.
The Agricultural Position
The founders of Binh Trang came from Kaelong's agricultural network and chose to leave it — not because Kaelong was failing, but because the F9V star at GJ 17 had substantially better agricultural conditions than the K8V system that earlier settlers had managed in wave_2, and because establishing their own settlement on their own terms was preferable to operating within the Kaelong Agricultural Syndicate's cooperative framework. This is a well-documented founding motivation and also a polite way of saying that the founders found the existing cooperative arrangement insufficiently theirs.
Three generations later, Binh Trang and Kaelong trade extensively and have a complicated relationship that the shared heritage both explains and complicates. Binh Trang's identity as independent from the Kaelong Syndicate's cultural weight has proven durable enough that the community maintains it even when the commercial logic of integration would be obvious. This is either civic independence or stubbornness, and the residents of both systems describe it using different terms.
The Pricing Structure
Thornfield Station's single gate connects to Binh Trang. Thornfield needs food. Binh Trang provides it under a bilateral trade agreement with a price stability provision: prices cannot be adjusted by more than a set percentage per cycle without joint council review. This is a standard framework and appears protective.
The pricing is denominated in credits tied to an inner-corridor index. When the inner-corridor index inflation rate runs above the stability cap's implied rate, Thornfield pays more in real terms without any formal price revision having occurred. The Binh Trang council's commercial advisors understand this dynamic. Whether the Thornfield Station council understands it is something Binh Trang's administrators have not raised with them, which is the kind of silence that can be explained in multiple ways and has not been explained in any way.
Practical Information
Binh Trang is six hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Kaelong, Thornfield Station, and GJ 660A. The agricultural output is substantial — the F9V primary produces better conditions than most corridor neighbors. The river-delta geography of the habitable world is genuinely beautiful. The Guardians of Autonomy chapter here organizes around corridor dependency rhetoric that does not entirely match the bilateral relationship it describes, but finds enough purchase to sustain a functioning chapter.
