THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — POSTO AVANÇADO
POSTO AVANÇADO named itself "forward post" and has spent two centuries making the name accurate, which is a more unusual achievement in the deep frontier than it sounds.
The Intent
Two hundred years ago, a Portuguese-heritage settlement group chose a dead-end system at hop 7, off a spur from GJ 482B, specifically because it was further out than most communities were willing to go. The intent was explicit: push the habitation frontier one more system outward, plant something that would survive, and call that success. The name was a description, not an aspiration — they knew what they were building and built it accordingly.
The M0V primary is dim and stable, requiring the agricultural engineering that red-dwarf communities across the deep frontier have developed and refined over generations. What Posto Avançado's two centuries add to that common inheritance is a food culture shaped by the specific constraints of their location: dense, preserved, seasonally precise, adapted to long lead times for resupply and long intervals between outside contact. Locals take genuine pride in it, which is either evidence that people can take genuine pride in almost anything or evidence that the food is actually good. Reports from the limited visitor population suggest the latter.
Self-Governance at the End of a Spur
The Commission post exists in the charter records. In practice, a Commission vessel visits annually, the rest of the time Posto Avançado governs itself, and the distinction between the two is not small. Two hundred years of continuous council operation produces institutional memory deeper than any outside authority's file on the system. The people here know their own history in detail. They treat outside interest — commercial or administrative — with a wariness calibrated by two centuries of experience with what outside interest tends to want.
The resource allocation board manages the supply relationship with GJ 482B. The lead times for manufactured goods and medical hardware are significant; planning horizons are long; the community has compensated by developing strong local fabrication capacity and by being selective about what it considers essential. The list of things considered essential has been refined across eight generations.
The Codicil
The founding settlement petition contains a codicil, sealed in the community archive. The public record gives the system selection rationale as agricultural suitability. The codicil, which the founding generation chose to seal rather than publish, describes something different. Two hundred years is long enough that most of the community has grown comfortable with the codicil's existence as a fact about their history rather than a question about their present. The founding generation's reasons for choosing this specific system over two comparable alternatives at similar distance are not, in any practical sense, relevant to daily life.
Whether they become relevant to anyone outside the archive is a different matter.
Practical Information
Posto Avançado is seven hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to GJ 482B. There is no through traffic; visitors arrive by specific intent or not at all. The community is self-sufficient in food, moderately dependent on external supply for manufactured goods, and governed by a council that has been meeting continuously for two centuries. The Commission post is staffed part-time. No external trading house maintains a permanent representative. The atmosphere is that of a place that has been solving its own problems for a long time and is courteous about it.
