THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RANA
RANA is a junction neutral between the inner corridor and the outer west, which is not an ideological position but a business model, and the distinction is important to understand before doing anything here that assumes otherwise.
The Warmth
The K0IV subgiant that gives Rana its character sits apart from the corridor's red dwarf standard in the way that early evening light differs from a headlamp — warmer, more generous, casting shadows at angles that feel familiar rather than alien. Arriving from most directions along the western branch involves an adjustment. After the cool dim light of Neustadt or Rødvik or the deep outer systems, Rana's sun reads as a luxury. The founding Wave 2 settlers noted this and stayed. By the time someone thought to name the place, everyone was already using the astronomical catalog designation, and it stuck.
Three gates. One back to Hansestadt. One outward to GJ 320. One lateral to GJ 370. Everything moving between the compliant inner corridor and the increasingly non-compliant outer systems arrives at one of those three apertures and waits for a scheduling decision.
The Neutrality
Rana has not signed the Compact of Westphalia and will not. The system's value derives entirely from sitting between Assembly-aligned and Compact-aligned territory. The moment Rana takes a side, it loses value with the other. This is not a principle. It is the arithmetic of junction governance, and the shipping cooperative that runs the system understands it with the clarity of people whose revenue depends on it.
The cooperative's customs office reviews outbound manifests for freight moving through GJ 320. A member of Hansestadt's Merchant Assembly also reviews them — in advance, under an arrangement described as "commercial coordination." This arrangement means the Merchant Assembly has advance sight of freight patterns revealing the commercial strategies of Compact-affiliated operators who believe their manifests are reviewed only by Rana's local authority. Eleven years of advance sight is a substantial intelligence advantage in a commercial dispute. Whether the cooperative considers this a breach of neutrality or a natural expression of where their relationships with the surrounding institutions have always tilted is a question best asked somewhere the scheduling supervisor is not within earshot.
Practical Information
Rana is six hops from Gateway with three apertures. Bunkering, warehousing, maintenance, layover hospitality — all available, all adequate. The Gate Corp staff contribute the cosmopolitan texture characteristic of junction systems that rotate people in from across the Reach. The subgiant star will keep providing its pleasant light for as long as K0IV stars typically do, which is long enough that no one here is worried about it.
