THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 146
GJ 146 is a dim M-dwarf corridor node between Randgebiet and GJ 853A, surveyed multiple times across multiple generations and found, each time, to be technically qualifying and practically discouraging — which is the particular combination that keeps a habitable world empty indefinitely.
The Survey Language
Survey teams visiting GJ 146 have, across multiple expeditions, employed the same careful vocabulary: the primary world is marginally habitable. The atmosphere is breathable. The temperature ranges fall within human tolerance with appropriate infrastructure. The geological stability is acceptable. The water distribution is adequate. The survey format makes these results available clearly, and the format also makes it clear that nothing here exceeds its parameters in any direction.
"Adequate" — the specific survey-report word that means technically qualifying and practically discouraging — appears in multiple GJ 146 assessments spanning different survey teams and different centuries. The word is doing work each time it appears.
Some survey visits by corridor vessels were not formally filed. What has been filed consistently reaches the same conclusion: a world you could live on with significant infrastructure investment, in conditions requiring continuous energy input to maintain acceptable warmth and light levels, providing nothing that is not available more easily and more comfortably at closer distances.
The Corridor Needed a Node
Transit vessels use GJ 146 as a waypoint between Randgebiet and GJ 853A. The horizon station ticks over. The cold primary world turns below. The corridor needed a transit point at this position, and the system meets the requirement. What the corridor needed and what the system offers are precisely matched, and precisely matched is the whole story: the system is what was needed and only what was needed. It has performed this function since wave-3 corridor mapping and shows no signs of aspiring to anything additional.
Practical Information
GJ 146 is ten hops from Gateway. The automated relay hardware is operational. No services are available. The habitable world is uninhabited and meets all the criteria that would theoretically qualify it for settlement and none of the criteria that would make anyone want to.
