Leuchtturm

GJ 142 | G-type | deep_frontier

The name means "lighthouse," and it was chosen because the system's G-type star is conspicuous this far out where M-dwarfs dominate the map. The founders who named it were astronomers, and they meant the word seriously: Leuchtturm is a reference point, a bright anomaly on the deep frontier, a place from which other things can be measured. Three hundred years of continuous observation have made it exactly that.

Population

Supply Dependency

Leuchtturm does not generate the agricultural surplus that corridor systems like Droëland achieve. The G-type star is warmer than most deep frontier systems, which is an astronomical advantage, but the habitable world has limited arable zones and a small founding cohort that never grew into a large agricultural population. The community has always been sized for research, not production, and has accepted the supply dependency that comes with that choice.

Food comes in from Knotenpunkt and the inner corridor. Leuchtturm exports data — processed astronomical records, deep frontier survey coordinates, spectroscopic archives that the community has been building for three hundred years. Whether this is an economically rational trade is a question that frontier agricultural systems occasionally raise with something approaching exasperation. Leuchtturm's researchers regard the question as a category error. They did not come here to grow crops.

The observatory infrastructure represents the community's primary capital asset and its dominant supply dependency. Precision optical instruments, cryogenic storage for data media, the relay arrays that transmit records inward to the inner corridor archives — all of this requires manufactured components that Leuchtturm cannot produce locally. Disruption to the supply line is an existential concern not for food but for the continuation of the work. The community maintains equipment reserves with this in mind.

Faction Notes

The Veil Institute has an informal relationship with Leuchtturm that is not classified as a formal presence but functions as one. Institute researchers use Leuchtturm's observational archives extensively; several of the community's senior astronomers have been affiliated with Institute projects at various points in their careers; the equipment calibration standards the community uses for its deep frontier surveys were originally developed by Institute researchers working with early Leuchtturm data. The relationship is collegial and mutually beneficial, conducted through professional networks rather than institutional agreements.

The Lattice Commission maintains a minimal presence. Leuchtturm's small population and academic character do not generate significant regulatory activity. Commission visits are infrequent and primarily administrative. The community regards this as an appropriate arrangement.

Silence Topic

What Leuchtturm does not discuss openly: certain anomalous readings from the deep frontier surveys, classified internally as "unresolved instrumental artifacts" in the community's archival system.

The designation is technically accurate — the readings have never been definitively explained, and they may genuinely be instrumental. What the community does not discuss is how long some of these "unresolved artifacts" have been present in the archive, how many independent observation runs have confirmed them, and why three generations of the community's best instrument specialists have not been able to attribute them to a known instrumental source. The readings do not look like stars. They do not look like anything the community's models predict should be present in those sky positions. They are present, consistent, and unexplained. The archivist who made the current classification did so fifteen years ago and has not changed it since.

Narrative Hook

Leuchtturm's three-century astronomical archive contains a set of consistent anomalous readings that three generations of researchers have been unable to attribute to any known source, classified as "unresolved instrumental artifacts" and never submitted to the wider scientific community.
