THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — OKAFOR STATION
OKAFOR STATION markets itself as the north corridor's most transparent financial hub, which is accurate in the same way that a window is transparent — you can see through it clearly, provided nobody has drawn the curtains on the other side.
The Family Exchange
Chukwuemeka Okafor, a Nigerian-heritage merchant, established the original transit post in Wave 3. Seven generations later, the Okafor family trading house is the dominant commercial entity — not the government, but the economic infrastructure that makes governance possible, which gives the family influence that formal titles understate.
The exchange handles cargo broking, financial services, and the kind of regional trade coordination that accumulates naturally in junction systems where three gate corridors converge. The elected council handles civic governance. The distinction between the two is maintained with the procedural formality of a founding culture that believes authority should be accountable and legible. Key decisions get made in extended consultation with affected parties before they reach the formal record, which means the formal record reflects consensus rather than producing it. This is not a flaw in the system. It is the system.
The Grain Position
The exchange has recently been executing a series of quiet forward-purchase contracts on grain shipments originating from Puerto Rivera, two hops inward. The contracts extend out eight years — an unusual horizon for commodity transactions at this distance. Someone in the exchange has seen or obtained Puerto Rivera's sealed variable-star planning report, or has independently modelled the same agricultural disruption scenario and is positioning ahead of it.
The family leadership has not briefed the council. The transparency has its curtains.
Practical Information
Okafor Station is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — a junction connecting toward the core via Barnard's Star, toward Lacaille, and into the outer north corridor. The G8V star supports one marginal habitable world with a thin atmosphere requiring ongoing management. Local food production covers perhaps a third of resident needs. The station economy runs on transit handling and Guild-certified cargo broking. The people are warm. The hospitality is genuine. The forward contracts are not mentioned.
