Sertão

GJ 138 | M-type | deep_frontier

The name means "backcountry," which is what the founders saw when they arrived: open country, unworked, far from anything organized. It was not a complaint. They came looking for backcountry and they found it. Two centuries of Portuguese-heritage agricultural settlement have worked the soil and adapted the crops and built the kind of community that does not distinguish between farming and identity. Sertão is the corridor beyond GJ 92, and the people here know what they are.

Supply Dependency

Sertão exports modest agricultural surplus toward Nascente and the inner south corridor. The M-dwarf cultivation techniques here are common across the Portuguese deep corridor — adapted seed stock, supplemental lighting for sensitive crops, irrigation calibrated for the specific precipitation patterns of the habitable world. The community is not innovating; it is doing something well-understood at the frontier end of a corridor that has been doing it for longer than Sertão has existed.

The dependency is in the direction of manufactured components, medical supplies, and the replacement parts for equipment that can't be locally fabricated. The supply line to GJ 92 and eventually Nascente is reliable enough but slow. The community plans lead times in months, not weeks. This is accepted as the cost of being where they chose to be.

Faction Notes

The Lattice Commission is present in the same way it is present across the Portuguese deep corridor: a filed registration, compliance schedules that are met on the community's timeline, no resident agents. The Commission's interest in Sertão is minimal; the community's interest in the Commission is equally minimal.

The Guardians of Autonomy have no formal chapter here, though the community's politics are broadly sympathetic. The practical position is that organizing in the name of autonomy is redundant when the practical reality is already autonomous. Nobody from the inner corridor tells Sertão what to do. The Guardian framework is for places where that isn't true yet.

What Sertão does not discuss with outsiders: the extent to which the community has modified traditional Portuguese agricultural practices in ways that depart from the inner corridor's maintained heritage traditions.

The inner Portuguese communities — Nascente, Travessia, and the settled systems closer to the core — maintain something like a living heritage practice: named crop varieties that descend directly from Earth lineages, cultivation methods preserved for cultural continuity as much as productivity. Sertão started from the same tradition but has been adapting under M-dwarf conditions for two centuries with minimal contact with those heritage institutions. The current agricultural practice has drifted. Some of the changes are improvements. Some are irreversible departures. The community does not regard this as a problem. Whether the inner corridor communities would agree is a question Sertão has not invited them to answer.
