THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SERTÃO
SERTÃO means "backcountry," and it was not a complaint. The founders came looking for backcountry, found it, and have spent two centuries making it exactly as productive as backcountry becomes when left to people who know what they are doing with it.
What the Name Covers
Hop 8, deep frontier, M-dwarf primary, through_route between GJ 204 and GJ 92. The Portuguese-heritage agricultural corridor runs south through the deep frontier, and Sertão is one link in it — not the oldest, not the most distant, but two centuries into the work and confident about the methods. The M-dwarf cultivation techniques are common across this corridor: adapted seed stock, supplemental lighting for sensitive crops, irrigation calibrated to the specific precipitation patterns of this habitable world. Sertão is not innovating. It is doing something well-understood at the frontier end of a corridor that has been doing it longer, and doing it well.
The modest agricultural surplus moves toward Nascente and the inner south corridor. The dependency runs the other direction for manufactured components, medical supplies, and replacement parts the community can't fabricate locally. The supply line to GJ 92 is reliable enough but slow. Planning horizons are long. This is accepted as the cost of having chosen to be here.
The Guardians and Their Absence
The community's politics are broadly sympathetic to the Guardians of Autonomy without sustaining a formal chapter. The practical position is that organizing in defense of autonomy is redundant when the practical reality is already autonomous. Nobody from the inner corridor tells Sertão what to do. The Guardian framework is for places where that isn't true yet.
What Has Drifted
The inner Portuguese communities — Nascente, Travessia, the systems closer to the core — maintain a living heritage practice: named crop varieties descended from Earth lineages, cultivation methods preserved for cultural continuity as much as productivity. Sertão started from the same tradition and has been adapting under M-dwarf conditions for two hundred years with minimal contact with those heritage institutions. The current agricultural practice has drifted. Some of the changes are improvements. Some are irreversible departures from the ancestral forms.
The community does not regard this as a problem. Whether the inner corridor communities would agree is a question Sertão has not invited them to answer, and no one from the inner corridor has visited recently enough to notice what has changed. Two centuries of separate development in separate conditions produces a separate thing. Sertão knows this and does not discuss it with outsiders, which is not the same as hiding it. It is, rather, the knowledge that some conversations have a cost that the person raising them expects you to pay.
Practical Information
Sertão is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 204 and GJ 92. Agricultural goods are available to transit vessels. The Commission's interest is minimal and the community's interest in the Commission is equally minimal. The Lattice Commission registration is current and no one has examined it closely.
