THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DÀI LỘ

DÀI LỘ means "grand road," and whoever named it four hundred years ago understood that they were marking not a destination but a continuation — a through-route at hop 8, the organized frontier's edge, where the aperture on one side connects to civilization and the aperture on the other connects to Murakami's Lantern and whatever the Frontier Compact navigators have been finding beyond.

The Frontier's Edge

Wave_2, genuinely sun-like G2V star at 39.2 light years, four centuries of continuous development that the infrastructure of Hải Cảng wears visibly in its layered architectural character. The Assembly's authority here is "acknowledged in principle," which is the Reach's diplomatic language for a formal registration that functions as polite fiction: quarterly signal packets are exchanged, both parties have read the correspondence, and the Tham Quan — whose name means inspection official, a deliberate irony that has become sincere — makes every consequential decision without external reference.

Vietnamese is the dominant cultural substrate. Four centuries of transit workers, contract laborers, and opportunistic settlers have added Korean, Japanese, and Chinese heritage in communities that have been blending for generations; there are Dài Lộ families who maintain three language traditions simultaneously and navigate between them depending on the room.

The Supply Gateway

Murakami's Lantern is forty years old, seven hops from Gateway via Dài Lộ, and completely dependent on this system for goods and equipment sourced from further inward. Dài Lộ's traders describe the relationship as mutual. Murakami's Lantern's colonists experience it as essential. The distinction reflects the power asymmetry of being the only aperture between a forty-year-old frontier outpost and everything it needs.

The Founding Capital

Wave_2 settlement authorizations were Assembly-funded as a rule. Dài Lộ's founding documentation shows initial capital investment approximately three times the standard Wave_2 grant structure. The private funding sources are described as "consortium investment under standard private development terms" — a phrase that appears in fewer than a dozen other Wave_2 founding documents, all of them associated with systems that subsequently developed unusual resource profiles or strategic corridor positions. What the consortium was and what return it expected have not been established by any public historical research. The Hải Cảng Merchant Association's archive contains four centuries of commercial records. What it contains about the founding capital structure is a separate question.

Practical Information

Dài Lộ is eight hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Murakami's Lantern and GJ 848. The Frontier Compact operates with the confidence of people who understand that no one with formal authority is paying close enough attention to stop them, which is accurate at this distance.

Adams of the Guide rates Dài Lộ: Grand Road. Still Going.
