THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MOYALE
MOYALE is a company town in the technical and literal sense, which the fifty thousand people who live here understand perfectly and have organized their expectations around accordingly.
The Company
Transitek East Africa — founded in the wave_4 period by a consortium of Kenyan and Ethiopian transport operators who recognized the frontier branch's supply gap before anyone else did — built the primary settlement, the transit depot, the communications relay, and most of the permanent infrastructure here. The population is substantially employed by Transitek, dependent on Transitek contracts for housing and essential services, and has been in this relationship for three generations. The founding executives made long-term supply agreements with systems both inward and outward that effectively guaranteed the depot's throughput regardless of broader frontier conditions. The agreements are still running. The systems are still transiting through Moyale because the contracts make it cheaper than alternatives, and the contracts were written to make it cheaper than alternatives.
Transitek is privately held, controlling interest concentrated in the founding families' descendants. It has never sought Syndic membership, Assembly charter amendment, or external financing. It does not need to. The supply agreements are its financing.
The Agreements
The founding supply agreements are not publicly filed in their complete terms. The agreement summaries registered with Murchison's commercial registry describe duration, general scope, and fee structure. They do not describe the exclusivity clauses, the penalty structures for route diversion, or the governance provisions that give Transitek audit rights over the settlement council's operational decisions. The full agreements exist in Transitek's private archive and in the private archives of the counterpart systems. No one has asked a court to review them. There is no court at Moyale.
The local governance is formally a settlement council elected by residents. In practice, the council's agenda is substantially shaped by Transitek's operational requirements, because Transitek's operational requirements are most of what the settlement's economy consists of. The compensation is reliable. The infrastructure is maintained. Transitek's management style is paternalistic, effective, and genuinely interested in stability. The grievances are specific and negotiable rather than structural, which is how company towns stay company towns.
Practical Information
Moyale is eleven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Murchison and Rekohu. The k-m primary is cool and stable. The settlement infrastructure is built to corporate specification, which means it is slightly over-engineered in ways that make it unusually reliable for this hop distance. Assembly jurisdictional claim is nominal; Transitek files annual reports structured to satisfy the minimum for active settlement classification.
