Dalim is a traditional Arabic star name — from the historical designation of a star in the constellation Fornax — and its use here, at hop 20, by a wave_4 founding cohort, is one of the more quietly interesting naming choices on the deep frontier.
The F8V primary is near-solar, warm and bright. The habitable world is a mid-sized terrestrial body with an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere, moderate surface water, and a geologically active interior that produces volcanic activity in the southern hemisphere and geothermal energy in sufficient quantity to power the settlement without supplemental infrastructure. The geothermal resource was the founding cohort's primary attraction: at hop 20, the ability to generate power without importing fuel or fabricating solar collection systems is not a convenience. It is the difference between survival and dependency.
The wave_4 settlers arrived approximately 140 years ago — a small cohort of approximately eighty people whose founding record identifies them as a "research and habitation expedition." The demographics are unusual for the deep frontier: the founding roster includes a disproportionate number of individuals with academic and technical backgrounds, including three with Veil Institute affiliations that are noted in the record and not elaborated upon. The Arabic naming convention and the presence of Institute-affiliated founders suggest a cohort that was drawn from the east_reach's technocratic corridor but chose to settle at extreme distance from its institutional base. The founding record does not explain why former Institute affiliates would travel to hop 20 to establish a settlement. The record is complete in what it contains and conspicuous in what it omits.
The community of approximately 500 people has developed a character that is difficult to classify by corridor standards. Dalim is not agricultural — the geothermal economy provides the power, and food is grown in heated greenhouses that produce year-round yields independent of the star's light cycle. Dalim is not industrial — there is no extractive economy and no manufacturing beyond what the community requires for its own maintenance. What Dalim produces is data. The settlement maintains an astronomical observation program, a geological monitoring network, and a communications relay that extends deeper along the corridor toward GJ 501B and beyond. The observation program's data is not published, not transmitted to the inner Reach's academic institutions, and not discussed with visitors. It exists. The community maintains it. The purposes it serves are the community's business.
The through-route connects Entremeio at GJ 147 to GJ 501B. Dalim's position at hop 20 — deeper than any conventional settlement on this corridor, older than the wave_5 community at GJ 501B beyond it — makes it the pivot point between the frontier's ordinary settlements and its extraordinary ones. Travelers heading deeper pass through Dalim and notice something they cannot easily articulate: the community is welcoming in the practiced way of people who have decided what visitors are allowed to see and are comfortable with the boundary. The hospitality is genuine. The transparency is not.
Supply Dependency
Food production is locally self-sufficient via geothermal-heated greenhouses. The critical dependency is in technical instrumentation — observation equipment, communication relay components, and specialized monitoring hardware that the community imports through the corridor at intervals of two to three years. The geothermal infrastructure itself is maintained using locally sourced materials and the community's considerable engineering expertise. Medical supplies follow the standard deep frontier pattern. The settlement's relative self-sufficiency in food and power means its supply dependency is narrower than most deep frontier communities, but the technical instruments it depends on are more specialized and harder to replace.
Faction Notes
Governance by an administrative council whose membership and selection process are not detailed in any document available to the Commission's deep frontier registry. The founding charter is on file; it specifies community governance without specifying the mechanism. Commission representatives who have visited Dalim describe the governance as "collegial" — a word that carries implications the representatives may or may not have intended. The community's relationship with the Veil Institute is the system's most significant institutional question: three founders had Institute affiliations, the community maintains an observation program whose data would be of Institute interest, and no formal relationship between the community and the Institute has been established in 140 years. Whether this represents a severed connection, a dormant one, or something else entirely is not information the community has shared.
Silence Topic
The observation program. What it monitors. What the data shows. Why three Institute-affiliated individuals traveled to hop 20 to establish a settlement with observation capability, and why the data they and their descendants have accumulated over 140 years has never been transmitted to the institutions that trained them. The silence is not hostile — the community will discuss astronomy, geology, and the geothermal resource in general terms with anyone who asks. They will not discuss the observation program's specific focus. The boundary is polite, absolute, and maintained with the particular confidence of people who have been keeping the same silence for longer than most visitors have been alive.
Narrative Hook
A wave_4 settlement at hop 20 founded by former Veil Institute affiliates, maintaining an unpublished astronomical observation program powered by geothermal energy, whose 140 years of accumulated data has never been shared with the institutions that would most want it.
Calibration Note
Wave_4 settlement at hop 20 with former Institute affiliates in the founding cohort is the corridor's most significant institutional anomaly. The community's self-sufficiency (geothermal power, greenhouse agriculture) explains its persistence at extreme distance. The Institute connection and the unpublished observation program suggest a founding purpose that extends beyond conventional settlement, consistent with the corridor's proximity to the wave_2 anomalies at GJ 546 and GJ 7547 and the terminus at Abzu.
