Saudade is a Portuguese word with no adequate translation. The closest approximation in any common Reach language is something like "the longing for something lost that may never return" — but that rendering loses the specific quality that makes the word irreplaceable: the saudade is not grief, and it is not hope, and it is not quite nostalgia. It is the feeling of a wound that has healed beautifully and still aches.

The community that bears the name understands this completely.

Three hundred years ago, Recanto — one hop inward at GJ 556 — was settled by political exiles: a faction expelled from an early Reach institutional consolidation, pushed to the frontier with their families and their records and their conviction that the institutions that expelled them had made a historical error. The families who founded Saudade were not expelled. They came voluntarily, one hop further in, to remain within reach of the people they could not follow into exile without becoming exiles themselves. They were the ones who stayed — who kept their positions, their property, their standing — and who used that standing to maintain a corridor of supply and communication to the expelled community they could not publicly defend.

Three centuries later, Saudade is still there. Recanto is still there. The political circumstances that produced the exile are three hundred years resolved, the original institutional actors long dead or transformed beyond recognition. What remains is the relationship: two communities one hop apart, bound by a loyalty that outlasted its occasion.

The difficult thing about Saudade — the thing the community lives with and rarely discusses — is that the loyalty has become the identity in a way that no longer has a clear object. The exiles of Recanto have been in exile so long that it is no longer exile; it is home. The grievance that Saudade existed to support has resolved into cultural memory. The corridor of supply and communication persists, but what it carries now is commerce and kinship, not political sustenance. The saudade in the name points at something that is still felt and no longer quite locatable — the absence of the thing that made the community's presence meaningful.

This gives Saudade a quality that visitors find difficult to name. The community is functional, stable, economically adequate, culturally coherent. It is also, at some level, oriented toward a loss that is not recent and not personal and not amenable to resolution.
