THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — OKORO'S CLAIM
OKORO'S CLAIM is named after a person who is still there, which means you will meet her, and she will have already decided what she thinks of you before you finish docking.
The Survey
Forty years ago this was a horizon station and an automated beacon. Today it is a station, several hundred people, drilling equipment, and a resource claim that Adaeze Okoro personally lobbied Okafor Station's trading house for years to support. She funded the initial survey herself. She wrote the founding charter. She is, in her late fifties, still present on the station, still functionally in charge of everything that matters, still holding no formal title beyond "founding surveyor."
The claim is on subsurface mineral deposits in the moon of a gas giant in the outer zone — cold, dark, partially shielded from the M-type flare star by the giant's magnetic field. The initial survey readings are promising. The follow-up drilling campaign is ongoing. Whether the deposits are what the survey suggests is the question that the entire settlement, and the trading house that is supplying it, is waiting to answer.
Okafor Commercial holds a 35% interest in the survey rights. They are, at present, waiting on drilling progress reports that have stopped arriving.
What Okoro Has Not Told Okafor Commercial
The drilling team reached an anomalous stratum at depth six weeks ago. Okoro asked them to complete an internal analysis before filing reports. She has not told Okafor Commercial the reports stopped. They are asking. She has disclosed enough to maintain the supply chain commitment but has withheld the most speculative projections — both the highly optimistic ones and the concerning ones — on the grounds that internal analysis should precede external disclosure. The labor guild representative, who operates under a portable workers' organization that covers multiple Wave 5 frontier settlements and has seen this pattern before, suspects the settlement's longer-term viability is less certain than Okoro presents.
None of this is in any document. The station is small enough that everyone knows everyone. People here do not commit their doubts to records. They commit them to faces, and they remember.
Practical Information
Okoro's Claim is four hops from Gateway at the end of a spur — two apertures connecting to Okafor Station in the core direction and Holmgren's Passage on the other end. You come here with a purpose. The M5.5 flare star is dim and active. The habitable body is a moon in the outer zone. The Assembly has no presence. Wolf 359's regional office has been notified of the settlement's existence in the standard manner, which means it is aware that the standard manner is all the attention this system gets.
The community is Nigerian in founding heritage, transient in current composition, and watchful in institutional culture. Bring a purpose. She will already know if you don't have one.
Adams of the Guide rates Okoro's Claim: Promising. Pending Analysis.
