THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HẠ LONG
HẠ LONG was named after a bay on old Earth, a place of limestone formations rising from shallow water so unlikely they looked artificial, and the founders chose the name because HL-Tienlong's ring system of unusual density stopped them the way that landscape must have stopped people on Earth — not with awe exactly, but with the specific feeling of encountering something that does not quite fit your category for natural things.
The Old System
Four hundred years of settlement. A G0V star that looks and behaves like a young sun at a hop distance where most primaries are dim red dwarfs. The Hạ Long Directorate runs the system's affairs with the confidence of an institution that stopped waiting for outside validation approximately three hundred and fifty years ago, which is a recognizable milestone in self-governing communities' development and one that usually cannot be undone.
The aquaculture industry that took two generations to establish is now four centuries old. Export-grade protein concentrates from Hạ Long Prime's ocean world reach inner systems under various trade labels that do not always acknowledge their origin, which suits a community whose relationship with visibility has been carefully managed. Strategic reserves calibrated to eighteen months of isolation date to a period two centuries ago when the inbound aperture required an extended maintenance closure and the community managed for eleven months on its own. The Directorate kept the standard.
The Archive Question
Hạ Long's transit logs are four centuries deep and represent one of the most complete unbroken transit records in this part of the corridor. The Directorate has confirmed to Assembly Intelligence on at least two occasions that the official logs are available for review under appropriate authority.
The Directorate has not confirmed the existence of a parallel archive maintained by the Keepers of the Crossing — an informal civic organization that has been recording observations, crew descriptions, and inferred cargo information alongside the official filing system for approximately three hundred years. The Directorate knows the parallel archive exists. The Assembly does not.
The Keepers describe themselves as a community memory function rather than an institution and resist all formalization. They know things the official record does not contain, which is the point, and they have been accumulating that knowledge for three centuries, which is a significant body of knowledge about everything that has moved through Hạ Long in either direction.
Practical Information
Hạ Long is seven hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Yeongwol and Dagat. The Tienlong Observers have been studying the ring system since late wave_2 — one of the longest active research programs in the corridor. HL-Tienlong still stops ships. The Directorate is competent and unhurried. The food export is excellent.
