Knotenpunkt — "junction point" in German — is precisely what its name describes, and has been for four hundred years. Three apertures. Three corridors meeting at hop 7, in the deep frontier, at a distance from the Reach's center that most people only reach by necessity. No single corridor owns Knotenpunkt, and none can afford to ignore it. It is the oldest deep_frontier junction, founded in the Trade Expansion era when the Reach was still willing to invest heavily in infrastructure at extreme range.

The K-type primary — a dim, stable star in the lower K range — provides little spectacle. The system's interest is entirely architectural: a transit hub at the intersection of three routes, each leading somewhere different, each carrying different kinds of traffic. GJ 142, GJ 324A, and GJ 83.1 all converge here, making Knotenpunkt the point through which a surprising proportion of deep_frontier movement must pass. At four hundred years, the transit infrastructure is overbuilt for the current traffic volume — the original planners expected more — but it remains functional and is maintained because the cost of allowing it to fail would be paid by every system in the surrounding network.

What four centuries at a junction does to a community is particular. The people here are neither rooted agriculturalists nor cosmopolitan traders, but something that grew from hosting both: a transactional culture that maintains strict neutrality between the corridors it connects, holds opinions about everything but expresses them sparingly, and has developed an acute sensitivity to changes in the traffic patterns that constitute their local economy.

Commission authority at this depth is nominal — a post exists, personnel rotate through on extended tours, and the bureaucratic relationship with the main Reach is functional but slow. The transit authority that Knotenpunkt's own civic structure operates carries more practical weight.

Supply Dependency

Knotenpunkt imports food from its corridor connections — it produces little of its own — along with manufactured goods, medical supplies, and the specialized transit hardware that keeps three-aperture junction infrastructure operational. Its export is service: transit handling, cargo bonding, refueling, crew accommodation. The balance has been roughly stable for two centuries.

Faction Notes

The Knotenpunkt Transit Authority is the dominant institutional presence, a local civic body with several centuries of accumulated legitimacy in managing the junction's three-corridor interface. It predates the Commission post by over a century and has far more operational authority.

Trading houses from all three connecting corridors maintain representatives here. The resulting commercial environment is competitive and closely watched; neutrality is enforced informally through reputational pressure as much as formal rule.

Silence Topic

The terms under which the original wave_2 founding charter allocated transit authority governance to what became the KTA rather than to any single corridor's political structure. There is a version of those negotiations in the KTA archive that differs in several material respects from the version in the Commission's records.

Narrative Hook

GJ 324A, one of the three corridor connections, has seen a significant decline in transit volume over the past three years — a reduction that Knotenpunkt's traffic analysts cannot explain from the publicly available information about that corridor's economic activity.

Calibration Note

Wave_2 three-aperture junction at hop 7 is exceptional — the deep_frontier junction has no parallel in the network for age combined with connectivity. Its founding during the Trade Expansion era reflects how aggressively the Reach once projected infrastructure before Secession and contraction reshaped priorities.
