THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KNOTENPUNKT
KNOTENPUNKT is the junction at the end of a corridor that the Reach's founders were optimistic about, which makes it a four-hundred-year monument to optimism and a transit hub of genuine ongoing necessity, both simultaneously and without apparent contradiction.
The Point Where Things Meet
Three apertures, three corridors, hop 7. The arithmetic of Knotenpunkt's importance is simple: everything moving through the deep frontier's northern arcs passes through this junction, because the hop topology leaves no alternative. The communities further out depend on it. The transit operators who base here understand this and have, over four centuries, developed the kind of institutional confidence that comes from being indispensable without being powerful — a position with revenue and without protection, which is a position Knotenpunkt's civic culture has learned to manage through strict neutrality enforced by reputational pressure.
The K5V primary is dim and unremarkable, the sort of star that junction settlements tend to occupy because junction settlements are chosen for their position in a network, not their stellar character. The original planners overbuilt the infrastructure for what the current traffic volume requires. This is understood by everyone who uses it as a reasonable precaution, and by everyone who built it as a significant embarrassment, and the latter group is four hundred years dead, which resolves the tension.
The Transit Authority
The Knotenpunkt Transit Authority predates the Commission post by over a century and has more operational authority than the Commission post has ever had. Four centuries of managing the junction's three-corridor interface has produced an institution with accumulated legitimacy, a detailed institutional memory of how traffic flows and what traffic anomalies look like, and a set of informal governance mechanisms that the KTA would describe as standard practice and an outside observer might describe as a parallel jurisdiction. Trading houses from all three connecting corridors maintain representatives here. They are watched closely by each other and by the KTA, which describes its monitoring function as facilitation and means it in both senses.
The terms of the original wave-2 charter that allocated transit authority governance to the KTA rather than to any single corridor's political structure appear, in the KTA's own archive, in a form that differs in several material respects from the version held by the Commission. The discrepancy has not been formally adjudicated. Both parties are aware of it. Both parties find the current arrangement functional.
The Pattern in the Numbers
Transit volume through GJ 324A — one of the three connecting corridors — has declined significantly over the past three years. Knotenpunkt's traffic analysts have the numbers. They do not have an explanation that fits the publicly available information about that corridor's economic activity. The gap between what the numbers show and what the numbers should show, given what is known, is the kind of gap that generates very specific kinds of speculation at the junction's crew accommodation facilities.
Practical Information
Knotenpunkt is seven hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to GJ 83.1, GJ 324A, and GJ 142. Transit services are reliable, professionally administered, and priced at rates that reflect four centuries of knowing what the alternatives are. The crew accommodation is functional. The food is imported. The people are pleasant in the manner of those who have hosted every kind of traveler for a very long time and have developed precise opinions about which kinds to extend credit to.
