GJ 702A was a deprecated binary system entry. Replace with GJ 1221, a real catalog star — DXP9 peculiar magnetic white dwarf at 20.03 ly. Dead-end topology connecting to EZ Aqr (GJ 866A). THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — 1221-DXP9
1221-DXP9 does not have a name. It has a catalog number and a spectral classification, and the spectral classification is the interesting part, because it means the star is dead, unreadable, magnetic, and should not be any of those things in that combination.
The Star
D means degenerate — a stellar corpse, the remnant of a star that burned out billions of years ago. X means the spectrum resists standard classification — the instruments cannot assign it a type. P means magnetically peculiar — the corpse has a magnetic field it should have lost long ago. 9 means it is at the coolest end of the temperature sequence, which is to say it has been cooling for a very long time.
White dwarfs at this temperature do not have magnetic fields. The dissipation timeline is well understood. The field should be gone. It is not gone. Something sustained it or something restarted it, and no published model accounts for either possibility.
The alien gate builders put an aperture here.
The Gate
One aperture. Dead-end topology. It connects to EZ Aqr, where Gate Corporation runs a monitoring waypoint that logs every transit through both of that system's gates. Anyone who enters 1221-DXP9 must exit through EZ Aqr's archive. The builders connected a gate to an anomalous dead star and placed the only exit at what would, centuries later, become a monitoring station. Gate Corporation did not build EZ Aqr's waypoint to watch 1221-DXP9. Gate Corporation built EZ Aqr's waypoint to service the east corridor's transit traffic. That the waypoint happens to log every vessel that visits the magnetically impossible dead star one hop away is either a coincidence or a fact that someone at Gate Corporation has noticed and not mentioned.
The Silence
No one lives here. No one has filed a colonial charter application. The Commission has not conducted a preliminary survey. The Veil Institute has registered a research interest — formal, on record, procedurally correct — and has not deployed personnel. Two hops from Gateway, in a well-transited sector, at a star whose defining characteristic is that it contradicts standard physics, every institution in the Reach has independently arrived at the same decision: not yet.
The Reach cannot explain why the builders connected a gate here. It cannot explain why the star is magnetic. It has not formally asked either question, which is the specific institutional behavior that occurs when the answer to one question might be the answer to both.
Practical Information
1221-DXP9 is two hops from Gateway with one gate aperture. There is nothing here — no stations, no population, no infrastructure beyond the horizon station itself. The system is empty in the way that a room is empty when everyone has decided, without discussing it, to wait in the corridor.
The Guide's correspondent transited through EZ Aqr, entered the system, observed the star, and returned. The transit was logged. The observation was unremarkable. The star was, as described, dead, dim, and magnetic. The correspondent's report ends here. She did not request a return assignment.
