THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 117
GJ 117 is an empty through_route that nobody settled, not because anything was wrong with it, but because the timing was unfavorable and the populations that might have seeded a community here had somewhere closer to go.
The Vacancy
The surveys were done. The M1V star has a stable habitable zone and no obvious settlement barrier. The east_reach push extended this corridor during an era of confident expansion, and GJ 117 was charted as an open route rather than a destination. The systems that might have founded something here were absorbed into closer, more connected communities during the economic contraction that followed. The apertures remained. The relay remained. The route remained empty.
At hop 7, it sees genuine transit traffic — vessels between the east_reach's outer corridors and the deep frontier beyond. Most of that traffic passes through without slowing. The in-system passage between apertures is clean and unremarkable. The automated relay broadcasts no anomalies. This is the situation as reported.
The Survey Pattern
Transit logs at GJ 117 show a consistent but unexplained pattern: a vessel identifying as a Commission survey ship transits the system once every three months, on a precise schedule, for at least the past seven years. No survey program matching the identifier exists in the public register.
This is not, on its own, a dramatic fact. Commission survey identifiers are administered through a tiered documentation system in which some operational programs exist at classification levels that do not appear in the public register. What makes this particular pattern notable is the precision: not approximately quarterly, but quarterly to within a few hours, for seven years, in an empty system that the Commission's public survey program has shown no documented interest in.
The relay's most recent log entry is current. Someone is maintaining it.
Practical Information
GJ 117 is seven hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to GJ 434 and GJ 211. No population, no resources under active development. The habitable zone is available for settlement under standard development license application. Nobody has applied.
