THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DEVEREUX POINT
DEVEREUX POINT is named after a survey team leader who marked the coordinate in her log as "the point" — the place where the loop closed — and then left, and the first permanent settlers named it after her in the tradition of honoring people who found things they never intended to stay for.
The Navigation Tradition
Marianne Devereux was French, methodical, and apparently not interested in living at the coordinate she calculated. Three hundred years later, Devereux Point has organized itself around the geometry she identified: a loop-member position equidistant between Kovács Loop and Relay 7, perpetually involved in everyone else's movement. The Transit Commission — technically an engineering body, practically the government — governs through an internally elected board of registered engineering professionals whose three-tier certification examination has restricted governance to the technical class for two centuries. They are genuinely expert in their domain and genuinely uninterested in anyone who is not, which produces good aperture routing and occasionally inflexible gate fee structures.
The community's civic pride centers on a calculation: the founding generation predicted the orbital perturbation of Devereux Platform over a five-hundred-year horizon, and the calculation has so far proved correct. The Transit Commission mentions this whenever the subject of institutional competence arises. It arises often.
The Loop Drift
The loop's geometry has shifted by a calculable fraction over three centuries. This is documented in Devereux's transit logs. No one has fully explained it. The Transit Commission has been quietly compensating for the drift in its routing calculations without filing a formal anomaly report, on the apparent grounds that an unexplained geometric shift in gate aperture positioning is more manageable as an operational footnote than as a formal inquiry trigger.
The founding records offer a parallel question: Devereux's first settlers arrived with better equipment and more institutional support than their wave_3 cross-corridor status would suggest. The Transit Commission describes early corporate partnerships as standard and unremarkable. Researchers who have examined the infrastructure investment profile note that the gap between what cross-corridor spur settlements typically receive and what Devereux clearly received in its first decade is not standard or unremarkable, and that the entity that filled the gap has not been publicly identified.
Practical Information
Devereux Point is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Relay 7 and Kovács Loop. The Heritage Society maintains the founding community's English and French identity through language programs and an annual survey commemoration. The Looper Guild operates shuttle services through the loop. The Transit Commission sets the fees. The Guild negotiates them. The drift in the aperture geometry continues, compensated for in the routing tables, unreported.
