THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — HWASEONG
HWASEONG is named after a walled fortress city on old Earth, which the founders chose because they wanted a name that would last and which has lasted, along with the fortress psychology the name was meant to invoke.
The End of the Line
Spur-end communities develop a specific quality — pride and defensiveness in a proportion that depends on how defensible the position actually is. Hwaseong's governing council calls itself the Seongnae, after the area inside a fortress wall, which is not subtle. The symbolism is accurate: this is a place that knows its boundaries and has spent two hundred years deciding how to feel about them.
The inward gate leads to p Eridani and the corridor beyond. The outbound gate leads to GJ 660A, which shows no signs of habitation and exists in Hwaseong's consciousness primarily as an aperture the Seongnae has petitioned the Assembly to close seven times in forty years. The Assembly has acknowledged each petition and done nothing, which is the customary relationship. The Prospectors' Association argues the aperture should be kept open and access rights negotiated rather than restricted. The civic argument between these positions has been a low-grade feature of Hwaseong's politics for thirty years and will probably continue until one of the petitions produces an outcome, which the Assembly's track record on the question does not suggest is imminent.
The Gap Years
Hwaseong's Archive Custodians are technically a cultural institution. They control what is known about the first two centuries of the system's history, have blocked three independent research projects in living memory on grounds of preservation integrity, and describe a fifteen-year period in the system's second century — roughly 150 to 165 years ago — as an administrative reorganization period.
Independent researchers who have tried to reconstruct the timeline report anomalies: population figures inconsistent, records sparse, the founding charter quietly amended during those years. The anomalies correspond precisely with the period when an Assembly survey of GJ 660A was conducted and subsequently sealed. The survey team did not return. The Seongnae does not discuss the gap years in public forums. The Archive Custodians do not invite outside examination.
Practical Information
Hwaseong is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to p Eridani and GJ 660A. HW-Prime's 1.3-standard gravity has made the system unexpectedly valuable for bone density research and pressurized tissue cultivation, and a cluster of research institutes has grown around that advantage. The Seongnae mentions this in every formal address. It is one of the few facts about Hwaseong that can be mentioned without someone becoming cautious.
