THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KRAKÓW JUNCTION

KRAKÓW JUNCTION was named after a Polish city that survived centuries of conquest by becoming indispensable to whoever held the surrounding territory, which was precisely the founding generation's thinking when they looked at a three-aperture gate topology and decided to stay.

The Calculation

The Wave 3 founders who settled here were Polish and Czech-heritage colonists who had studied the gate charts before committing to a position and recognized that a junction at hop 5 connecting three distinct west_reach branch paths would carry traffic regardless of what happened to the systems around it. They named their home after a city that had made the same calculation on Earth. The calculation has held.

Traffic moving between the inner corridor's deep west connections and the outer systems beyond GJ 3454 either passes through Kraków Junction or adds a significant detour to its route. Most operators do not add the detour. The bunkering and warehousing and transit documentation economy that has grown from this is stable and self-sustaining.

The Council

The Kraków Council — named for the city's historical governance traditions — holds public sessions that are genuinely public. Recorded, attended, debated in front of audiences. For a system of this size, the level of civic participation is unusual in a way that visitors either find heartening or exhausting, depending on whether they live there.

This is why the MVG forwarding contract's routing priority provision is more awkward here than it would be elsewhere. The Council approved the contract after eight months of public deliberation. The public deliberation was conducted on a summary of the contract's terms rather than the full language. The specific provision giving MVG-affiliated freight priority in the Gate Corp scheduling queue — over independent operators of equivalent or higher volume — appeared in summary form, described as "preferential commercial routing." Several independent operators have since reported queue delays consistent with the priority structure in operation. The Council's governance traditions make this harder to suppress than it would be in a system with a less transparent institutional culture. As a result, it has not been suppressed so much as procedurally deferred, repeatedly, through mechanisms the Council's own rules provide for.

This is a different thing from suppression, and everyone involved understands the distinction.

Practical Information

Kraków Junction is five hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to GJ 3454, GJ 631, and GJ 896A. The Gate Corp base is significant for a hop-5 junction and has been administered under a protocol negotiated with the Kraków Council that has been revised three times, each revision preceded by the public sessions that characterize how governance works here. Gate Corp's regional management has opinions about the public sessions. The Council is aware of those opinions.
