THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ZENZELE
ZENZELE means "do it yourself," which is not a slogan but an ethic, and the distinction is immediately apparent to anyone who asks for help and receives instead a thorough explanation of how to obtain it independently.
The Ember
The primary at GJ 1111 is an M6.5-type red dwarf, which puts it at the extreme cool end of the M-dwarf sequence, close enough to the hydrogen-burning minimum that the category "star" is doing some work. It emits irregular high-energy events the residents describe simply as flares and manage with the particular combination of preparedness and unsentimental practicality that characterizes communities who learned the hard way that a star's moods are not negotiable.
The electromagnetic hardening infrastructure Zenzele developed over three generations to protect its station habitats and surface installations from the primary's activity is now, quietly, one of the system's main exports. Technical consultation and purpose-built shielding components move outward through the five-gate network to newer systems whose residents are still in the process of discovering what their own stars will do to their equipment. This is the kind of expertise that looks obvious in retrospect: communities built around surviving hostile stellar environments are exactly the ones you want designing your hardening standards. Zenzele's founders understood that self-reliance at sufficient depth eventually becomes marketable.
The Infrastructure Guilds
The settlement was chartered three hundred years ago by wave 3 Zulu-heritage emigrants who built the transit processing facility before completing their first residential block, established the agricultural cooperative before filing their formal registry, and named their home at the founding meeting without ever revisiting the decision. The Infrastructure Guilds — a network of cooperating specialty cooperatives covering station maintenance, flare hardening, gate operations, and agricultural management — predate the formal government and have, in practice, never stopped being the primary institutional authority. The elected assembly defers to them on technical matters, which is most matters.
The Zenzele Flare Watch maintains the most comprehensive real-time situational picture in the system. It is nominally a public safety institution. It is also, without any formal mandate or particular intention, the best-informed body in the Reach regarding what the primary is doing at any given moment, which is a form of knowledge that tends to make itself useful in unexpected ways.
The pre-settlement horizon station commissioning records show an irregularity in who controlled the gates during the period before the charter was filed. The gates were partially functional when the first wave 3 settlers arrived. The question of who authorized that commissioning was never resolved in the official record. The community has chosen not to press it. The gates work.
Practical Information
Zenzele is four hops from Gateway with five gate apertures — a hub connecting to Lalande and four outer systems. The Assembly maintains a modest presence that local port authority manages under delegated authority; residents will explain the distinction at length if asked. The founding Zulu heritage is maintained through language instruction, naming convention, and oral tradition formalized into community archives. The light is dim. The infrastructure is excellent.
