THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TÌNH YÊN

TÌNH YÊN means "peaceful," which the founders chose with the slight irony of settlers who had seen the world they were about to inhabit — blue-white light, cool surface, substantial ultraviolet loading — and decided the name should describe what they intended rather than what they encountered.

The Caves

The defining feature of Tình Yên is not the star, the topology, or even the export economy. It is the caves. The cave systems cover roughly a third of the accessible landmass and descend to depths that have not been fully mapped after three hundred years of habitation. In the humid depths, in the largest cavern systems, something lives that was not planted by human settlement: bioluminescent fungi in colonies on cave walls and ceilings, producing steady blue-green light with no apparent circadian rhythm. Several cave-adapted invertebrates produce the same light, possibly through symbiosis that predates the settlement by geological time. Travelers have walked for hours through what felt like permanent twilight generated entirely by living things.

The Vietnamese-heritage founding community recognized immediately that this was both a resource and something requiring careful management. Three hundred years of layered use followed: upper caves for commercial substrate farming, transition caves for research and monitored harvesting, deep caves under strict ecological reserve rules with their own enforcement apparatus. The Suối Tối label — dark spring — commands premium pricing in export markets four corridor systems in each direction.

The Sealed Passage

Twelve years ago a mapping team entered the deepest accessible cavern network and reported a passage section where the bioluminescent ecology was absent — not dead, but simply not present — over approximately two kilometers of bare rock with a faint chemical odor none of them could identify. The survey was filed internally. The anomaly was noted. No follow-up survey has been assigned. The Reserve Authority's director at the time ordered the passage sealed pending further study.

The passage is still sealed. The sealing order exists in an internal file that should have been archived years ago and was not logged in the public permit registry. A university research team from Seongho has recently filed a permit application requesting access, citing new biochemical analysis, unaware that the sealing order's filing status would be an obstacle. The Reserve Authority's current director has recently discovered that the sealing order is not where it should be.

Practical Information

Tình Yên is seven hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Seongho. The fungi export income sustains a positive trade balance in most years. The Guides' Circle controls its own certification process and has resisted every attempt to transfer that authority to a government body. The upper caves are commercially farmed. The deep caves are beautiful and restricted.

Adams of the Guide rates Tình Yên: Luminous. Certain Passages Pending Review.
