THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MABUHAY
MABUHAY means "long life" in Filipino, which the founding cooperative used not as an aspiration but as a defiance — at least two inner-corridor development agencies had told them the system's K-type primary did not warrant the investment of a permanent settlement, and they funded the charter themselves.
The Self-Sufficient
Wave_4 at 42.1 light years. The cold habitable body supports a specific microbial ecology that, with modification, produces a highly efficient atmospheric nitrogen-fixing cycle. Mabuhay's farms are not productive by inner-reach standards. They are self-sufficient in a way that most frontier systems at this distance are not, which is the difference between being correct and being impressive. The founding cooperative was correct about the one thing the development agencies missed.
Three generations of sustained independence from reliable Assembly resupply. The founding families built a governance system — council of cooperative shares, quarterly elections, share dilution constitutionally impractical — that reflects the settlement's history and is explicit about this to anyone who asks. They are less explicit about the voting structure. The Assembly has no operational presence. The charter was filed because Gate Corporation horizon station services require a charter, and horizon station services require a gate, and a gate is the only reason to be here.
The Survey Notifications
The horizon station at GJ 482A — Dagat — is accessible from Mabuhay's outer gate. Mabuhay residents have been conducting informal surveys of the system for over a decade. They have not filed the Assembly notification that their charter technically requires for any charted system within three hops of a registered settlement. They have not filed it because the founding families intend to develop it themselves, on terms the Assembly did not write. What they have found is internal to cooperative governance and not accessible to outside inquiry without cooperative council approval.
The Assembly survey data for the adjacent system has not been publicly released. Mabuhay appears to have its own.
Practical Information
Mabuhay is nine hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Dagat and Trung's Crossing. The Gate Corporation's communication relay is the only institutional link to the broader Reach that the cooperative actively maintains. The word mabuhay can also be used as a toast at the beginning of a shared meal, meaning more or less: may you live. The founding cooperative understood this when they named the system, which is why the defiance and the warmth are the same word.
