THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BESTEVAER
BESTEVAER is an ocean world at the end of a dead-end branch, seven hops from Gateway, where Dutch settlers arrived, looked at a planet that was mostly water, and built what their heritage demanded they build: things that float.
The Ocean
The K7V primary casts warm orange light through the upper water column in a way that drives extraordinary photosynthetic activity at depth. The storms can be severe. The wave patterns are complex and beautiful, and that sentence appears in every travel document about this system because it is true and because the alternative — "the storms will kill you if you're unprepared" — is equally true but creates a different impression.
Settlement infrastructure floats on platform habitats anchored to shallower shelf zones, with secondary communities on the island chains that barely clear the waterline. Aquaculture is the primary food production. Marine engineering has become the system's most developed technical specialty. The vessels designed for atmospheric ocean work — built on hulls rather than skids — were locally prototyped within two decades of settlement and have been refined ever since by people who have no reason to spend their engineering time on anything else. The marine products that export toward Altmark and through the corridor represent a quality that you cannot easily replicate on systems that have not spent forty years learning what specific depths of this specific ocean contain.
The Commission has a charter registration for Bestevaer and a vessel that stops twice a year. Between stops, the maritime council governs under a captain-arbitration system for dispute resolution that predates any formal Commission framework. The Commission found it easier to recognize than replace.
The Zone
A section of the ocean floor in the southern deep basin has been marked as a restricted navigation zone for as long as the settlement has existed. The stated reason is geological instability. The boundaries were drawn before the settlement had equipment capable of surveying that depth. Nobody has surveyed it since. Three months ago, a deep-ocean monitoring buoy transmitted a brief structured frequency pattern — not geological in origin — from inside the zone, and then went silent. The maritime council has discussed this at two sessions. The discussion has not been public.
Practical Information
Bestevaer is seven hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Altmark. The import lead times for manufactured components are significant. The preserved seafood is exceptional.
