THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PORT DESROCHERS
PORT DESROCHERS was named by a French-Canadian transit specialist who followed the gate topology rather than the cultural corridor, which is either a bold cross-reach commercial move or a statement about what the north_reach's opportunities looked like compared to an undeveloped east_reach junction — and from Mathieu Desrochers's own commercial archive, it is clearly the latter.
The Family Business
Three gates, wave_3 settlement, three generations of Desrochers family management over an east_reach demographic base that grew to fill the system after the founding. The family name is the most visibly non-east_reach thing about Port Desrochers. Everything else — the labor pool, the civic culture, the commercial operators who lease the gate ferry infrastructure — is drawn from the east corridor's migration patterns. The Desrochers family built the platform; the east_reach filled it in.
This produces a system with an unusual character: French-Canadian commercial instincts layered over east_reach community culture, which in practice means the public civic life looks east_reach and the commercial decisions flow through the founding family's network in ways that are not always explained to the public civic structures. The family considers this a reasonable arrangement for a privately-developed transit junction. Most residents consider it a reasonable arrangement for the same reason, because the transit infrastructure works.
The Financing Question
Mathieu Desrochers did not have the capital to develop a three-gate junction independently. He did not advertise this. A north_reach investment consortium provided the financing as a silent equity stake and held that stake for forty years before the family bought it out. The buyout terms are in the consortium's private records, not in any public filing. At least one subsequent commercial decision — the selection of a specific gate ferry contractor over a lower-cost alternative — has been attributed by people who know the family well to a relationship obligation from the buyout rather than a purely commercial judgment.
The family maintains that the contractor in question is simply good. The contractor in question is good. Whether they are the best available value, or the best available value consistent with a commitment the family made twenty years ago and does not discuss, is a distinction that only the buyout records can settle.
Practical Information
Port Desrochers is five hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Dernier Quai, Kaur's Observatory, and Nová Tržnice. The habitable body feeds the resident population without imports, a strategic priority the founders built in from the beginning — a system that can feed itself is a more defensible commercial position than one that cannot. The family's commercial archive is detailed and accessible, and documents the founding as an economic calculation rather than a geographic preference.
