THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CAPARICA
CAPARICA is a shallow-ocean world that has spent three centuries becoming very good at feeding other people while being reasonably careful not to ask too much about the original contract.
The Aquaculture Question
The habitable world sits close to its M-dwarf primary in the particular way that M-dwarf habitable worlds must, which is to say that it receives its light at an angle the founders found suboptimal and the current population has simply stopped thinking about. The settlement is in the terminator band — the strip of permanent dusk where the tidally locked geometry produces livable temperatures — and the ocean here, in these permanent twilight latitudes, is shallow and productive in ways the founders did not entirely anticipate. Kelp forests. Pelagic farms. Open-water harvest operations that supply food to systems considerably farther out that cannot grow their own.
The cooperative council that runs the aquaculture syndicates is slow and consultative, which visitors sometimes read as complacency. It is not complacency. It is the considered institutional posture of a community that has lived at the end of a single transit route for three hundred years and has decided that the most dangerous thing it could do is move fast. The reserve stockpiles would sustain the system for months if the single gate to Altair stopped functioning. The council built those stockpiles on purpose, over generations, precisely because they understood what it would mean if they hadn't.
The Agreement
The founding-period supply agreement with the Syndic agricultural network is not secret. The terms that matter — pricing formulas, quality grading, priority-loading access at Altair — are recorded somewhere in the cooperative archives. They have been renegotiated, on the surface, several times. Whether the structural core reflects three centuries of accumulated market reality or three centuries of accumulated founding-era imbalance is a question the council does not bring to session. The founding families whose grandparents signed it are well represented in current leadership. The community that depends on stability is the same community that would need to challenge the terms if it turned out they were unfavorable. These are the kinds of problems that can persist for a very long time when everyone involved has good reasons not to look directly at them.
The Lattice Commission inspector who visits periodically is, by longstanding tradition, offered a meal before conducting the biosecurity review. This is considered courteous. It is also, by longstanding understanding, practical.
Practical Information
Caparica is four hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — a spur end, one route in and out through Altair. The protein exports are genuinely excellent, and the cooperative-run markets at the transit terminal carry preserved aquaculture products that travel well and are worth the bag space. The light is dim and the sky is a permanent amber-grey that south Reach visitors either find atmospheric or oppressive, usually depending on how long they stay.
