Corporation Archetype Taxonomy

Decision: D-175 (Corporation Taxonomy and Prerequisite) Source: Workshop #796 Round 2 — Miri (28 lore archetypes), Burnelli-Sheldon (6 behavioral archetypes) Purpose: Generation templates for Tier-2 (~150) and Tier-3 (~5,000) corporations.

Two Orthogonal Systems

Corporation archetypes are defined by two independent dimensions:

Dimension File What it encodes Count
Lore archetype lore.toml WHAT a corporation does and WHERE it operates — sector, commodity focus, geographic distribution 28
Behavioral archetype behavioral.toml HOW a corporation behaves — pricing strategy, volume strategy, market posture 6

Every generated corporation gets one lore archetype and one behavioral archetype. The two systems are independent: any lore archetype can pair with any behavioral archetype. A deep_rock_extraction + Monopolist is a mining conglomerate that controls a scarce deposit and extracts maximum rent. A deep_rock_extraction + Cooperative is a workers' collective selling at cost-plus. Same WHAT, different HOW.

Lore Archetype Categories (28 total)

Category Count Description
Extraction 5 Raw material extraction from planetary, asteroid, gas giant, and comet sources
Agriculture 6 Food, fiber, timber, and biological production
Manufacturing 6 Transformation of intermediates into finals
Trade / Logistics 4 Freight transport, distribution, clearing
Services 6 Professional and experiential services
Intelligence 1 Commercial data, market intelligence

Five of the 28 archetypes are east-reach anchors — defined specifically to give the east reach distinctive economic identity: deep_ocean_fishery, precision_instrument_maker, fermentation_cooperative, maritime_salvage, textile_craft_guild.

Behavioral Archetype Summary (6 total)

Archetype Pricing posture Volume posture Canonical Tier-1 examples
Monopolist Above equilibrium — extract rent from supply control Restrict to maintain price Gate Corporation, Bifröst Marmor
Distributor Near equilibrium — compete on throughput Maximize, run near capacity Sova Logistics
Producer Cost-plus — invest margins in capacity Optimize at rated capacity Stalownia Kowalski
Specialist Premium — quality signals maintained through price Deliberately limited Calloway Distillery, MVG
Cooperative At or near cost-recovery — member benefit primary Member-capacity-driven East-reach fermentation collectives
Intermediary Bid-ask spread — convert information asymmetry to margin Market-clearing Mercado Travessia, Groombridge clearing house

Generation Pipeline

These templates are consumed by:

  • generate_corporations binary (Tyre, Phase 2 deliverable) — distributes Tier-2 and Tier-3 instances across the star map
  • Coverage rule: minimum 3 corporations per major commodity type, 1+ per inhabited system above 100K population (D-175)
  • Tier-2 corps get both a lore archetype and a behavioral archetype with named identity
  • Tier-3 corps are instantiated from lore archetype template with randomized behavioral archetype from behavioral_affinity list
