Overview

Re-embodiment is not a commodity. The Assembly's medical framework is explicit on this: the procedure that transfers a human's neural pattern from one biological substrate to another, the one that makes it possible to continue living after the body's useful life ends, is a licensed medical service with specific certification requirements, mandatory continuity assessment protocols, and legally defined standards for what constitutes a successful transfer. It is not something that can be purchased from an uncertified provider and have the result recognized under Assembly law.

Somatic Futures holds the certification. More precisely: Somatic Futures, and a small number of other certified operators, hold the Assembly re-embodiment medical license that makes the result of their procedures legally recognized as a continuous person. Somatic Futures is the largest of these operators by both clinic count and annual procedure volume.

Prometheus Labs makes the hardware that makes the procedure possible — the neural interfaces, the substrate equipment, the scanning apparatus. Somatic Futures administers the procedures. The two companies coexist without formal partnership, each dependent on the other in ways neither acknowledges.

Origin

The first generation of re-embodiment practitioners were mostly affiliated with universities or independent research institutes. The procedure was experimental, expensive, unreliable, and conducted by people whose primary interest was the science rather than the commerce. This was, for early adopters, a significant problem: experimental procedures with unreliable continuity outcomes, conducted by institutions with no commercial accountability and no long-term incentive to follow up on failures.

Somatic Futures was founded by a cohort of former academic practitioners who had concluded that the procedure needed to be industrialized before it could be trusted. Not in the sense of being made cheap or routine — re-embodiment is still neither — but in the sense of having standardized protocols, quality control, malpractice accountability, and the kind of institutional continuity that allows outcomes to be tracked across decades. The founders secured early Assembly licensing, developed the continuity assessment protocol that eventually became the Assembly standard, and began building a clinical network.

The Assembly medical certification that Somatic Futures now operates under is, in significant part, the standards framework that Somatic Futures' own founders drafted and lobbied for. The institution has been both regulated by and partially author of its own regulatory environment for two centuries.

Operations

Continuity assessment: Every Somatic Futures procedure begins with a continuity assessment — a standardized multi-week process evaluating whether the client meets the legal and neurological criteria for a recognized continuous identity transfer. Clients who do not meet the criteria are offered alternative options (counseling, alternative medical pathways) and declined the procedure. The refusal rate is not published. It is higher than the public's casual assumptions about the difficulty of re-embodiment suggest.

Clinical network: Somatic Futures operates full-service re-embodiment clinics at major population centers (hop 1-4) and smaller consultation-and-referral facilities at mid-reach systems (hop 5-7). Full re-embodiment procedures are only conducted at accredited full-service facilities. The network size reflects a calculation: the procedure requires a level of equipment and staff that only makes economic sense at sufficient population density.

Implant interface: Somatic Futures does not manufacture implant hardware. It operates through Prometheus Labs-compatible equipment at all facilities and maintains a supplier relationship with Prometheus that is operationally close and commercially arm's-length. What Somatic Futures provides that Prometheus Labs does not is the licensed medical procedure itself — the assessment protocols, the clinical judgment, the regulated framework. The hardware is necessary but not sufficient.

Sato Medical relationship: For systems where Somatic Futures has no full-service facility, the company has certified third-party arrangements with Sato Medical Systems in the east reach. These arrangements allow clients in the outer east corridor to receive consultation and assessment services without traveling to a Somatic Futures facility. The referral relationship is commercial rather than institutional — Somatic Futures does not own or control Sato Medical.

Political Relationships

The Concord Assembly Medical Certification Board: Somatic Futures holds Assembly re-embodiment certification. The relationship involves annual audits, ongoing compliance reporting, and a regulatory dynamic that is technically adversarial (the Board exists to scrutinize Somatic Futures' practices) but practically cooperative (the Board depends on Somatic Futures' data for its own understanding of re-embodiment outcomes). Two Somatic Futures alumni have served on the Certification Board in the past century, creating institutional memory flows in both directions.

Prometheus Labs: The hardware relationship is commercially formal and privately intimate. Both institutions are aware that the other's market position depends in part on the other's continued operation. Neither has a formal agreement acknowledging this dependency. Both have legal teams that have thought carefully about what would happen if the dependency became a conflict.

The Veil Institute: Somatic Futures has conducted the re-embodiment procedures for a number of Veil Institute researchers, including some of the Institute's most senior members. The Institute's interest in the frontier between neurological pattern integrity and personal identity overlaps with Somatic Futures' clinical research domain in ways that neither institution discusses in public materials. The Institute is, among other things, the organization that Somatic Futures' practitioners suspect knows most about the edge cases where continuity assessment produces indeterminate results.

Unlicensed operators: Shadow economy re-embodiment exists. The unlicensed operators are categorized as canonical contraband under Assembly medical law. They advertise to clients who do not meet certified criteria or who cannot afford certified services. Somatic Futures' institutional position on unlicensed operators is that they are a public health crisis. Somatic Futures' commercial position is that unlicensed operators provide an alternative for clients the certified market has declined — and that the existence of that alternative limits the political pressure for expanding Assembly certification to lower-standard providers.

What They Don't Talk About

The continuity gap.

The re-embodiment continuity assessment is designed to determine whether the individual who emerges from the procedure is, in the relevant legal and neurological senses, the same person who entered it. The assessment passes most clients. A small fraction — historically, approximately 2-3% across Somatic Futures' annual procedure volume — are assessed as discontinuous: the emerging individual shares memories and neurological architecture with the entering individual, but the continuity markers that the Assembly's legal framework requires are not present at the threshold level.

These clients are not legally dead. The individual who emerges from the procedure is a person with legal standing. But they are not, under Assembly law, continuous with the person who entered the procedure. Their pre-procedure assets, relationships, contracts, and obligations are therefore subject to a legal status determination that Somatic Futures' legal team has spent two centuries refining. The determination almost invariably holds that the discontinuous individual has no claim on pre-procedure assets by right of succession — and that those assets therefore pass to whatever designation the pre-procedure individual made, which is typically a family estate or the pre-procedure individual's own trust vehicle.

What Somatic Futures does not discuss: the rate has been 2-3% for as long as continuous records exist. The medical literature suggests the rate could be reduced with different assessment criteria. Somatic Futures has not adopted different assessment criteria. The trust vehicles that receive assets from discontinuous outcomes are, in a meaningful fraction of cases, managed by institutions that have correspondent relationships with Groombridge financial houses.

Gameplay Relevance

Somatic Futures is the institution that makes extended human lifespans legally recognized. A player investigating a long-lived individual — someone whose history spans centuries — will pass through Somatic Futures' records at multiple points. Each re-embodiment in that individual's life is a potential discontinuity point, a moment where the legal thread of identity could have been contested.

For direct gameplay, Somatic Futures clinics are environments where NPCs are at their most vulnerable and their most honestly self-reflective. The pre-procedure assessment process, which involves extensive psychological and neurological evaluation, creates a context where individuals reveal aspects of themselves that they would not discuss in any other setting.

The continuity gap is a narrative trigger. A player who discovers that a powerful figure in the Reach underwent a "discontinuous" re-embodiment — and that the asset transfer following that discontinuity was handled in a specific way — has found a lever. Whether they use it is another matter.
