Round 3: all four agents challenged the sealed envelope against existing Builder/Interstitium/Gate lore. Key finding: no contradictions with canon. All four independently converged on high-bleed gates = failed vigil signal. All four endorsed the vigil predating human tenure. Inner sealed envelope identified as required for implementation. GJ 6711 Challenge Brief — Endgame Stress Test
Context
The project lead has established a sealed envelope for GJ 6711 (Stillpoint).
Read it: docs/workshops/gj-6711-furthest-system/sealed-envelope.md
The core claim: something at GJ 6711 requires continuous observation to remain stable. The act of observation is load-bearing. The founding settlers were recruited — not by beings, but by the situation. Three hundred years of unbroken vigil.
This must now be pressure-tested against the existing canon about the Builders, the Interstitium, Founder Gates, and the Veil Institute. The sealed envelope is the project lead's direction — your job is not to overturn it but to find where it breaks, where it needs reinforcement, and what it implies for the wider setting.
Required Reading
Before writing your challenge response, read ALL of the following:
docs/workshops/gj-6711-furthest-system/sealed-envelope.md— the canonical answerwiki/technology/founder-gates.md— gate network, the Interstitium, dormant gateswiki/factions/veil-institute.md— Institute mandate, classification, Builder researchdocs/discussions/round-14-worldbuilding-settled-reach.md— sections 3 (Interstitium & Builders), 4 (tiers/perception), and Miri's responses on the Threshold and Gyre events (search for "Gyre", "Builder", "Threshold", "observation")
Key Canon Points to Test Against
- "The Builders are what lives there" (in the Interstitium)
- "The Builders are watching through infrastructure the Reach depends on"
- Gates may serve purposes beyond transit: "communication, observation, something else"
- Some Gyre events exhibit "apparent intention"
- Higher perception sees more during transit — "the impression of presences"
- Dormant aperture activated without human intervention (Struve, ~40 years ago)
- The Threshold: what Elevated characters sense, adjacent to/continuous with the Interstitium
- "The Founders may have built the gates to reach it [the Threshold]. Or the Builders ARE what happens when you cross it."
The Bridge
The sealed envelope claims observation is load-bearing at GJ 6711. The existing canon says "the Builders are watching through infrastructure the Reach depends on." If both are true, GJ 6711 may be a place where observation flows BOTH WAYS — humans watching something that watches back. The gate at hop 23 was placed not for transit but for surveillance. Or worship. Or containment. Or something the distinction between those words doesn't cover.
Your Challenge
Write your response to: docs/workshops/gj-6711-furthest-system/challenge-{your-name}.md
Address ALL of the following:
1. Canon Compatibility
Does "observation is load-bearing" contradict anything in the existing Builder/Interstitium/Gate canon? Be specific. Quote the source if there's a conflict.
2. Implications for the Wider Setting
If continuous observation is load-bearing at GJ 6711, what does that imply about:
- Other dead-end systems (are some of them also watch posts?)
- High-bleed gates (is "bleed" what happens when observation lapses?)
- The Struve activation (did it activate because someone started watching?)
- The Veil Institute's actual mandate (do they know about the vigil?)
- The Threshold concept (is crossing it what happens when a watcher watches long enough?)
3. What Breaks If the Vigil Fails
The sealed envelope says "not dangerous if watched, unknown if not watched." What is the "unknown"? Not a definitive answer — but what are the candidates? What would a temporary lapse in observation produce? A Gyre event? A gate deactivation? Something new? What would the community's institutional response to a near-miss look like?
4. The Doors
"The doors are taller because sometimes the watch changes and not everything that takes a shift is human-sized." What takes a shift? Is this a Builder manifestation? A Threshold-crossed entity? Something the founding settlers brought? Something that was already there? What does this imply about the relationship between watchers and the watched?
5. The Endgame Hook
GJ 6711 is hop 23 — the furthest system in the Reach. A player who reaches it has invested enormously. The sealed envelope positions it as the place where the game's deepest mystery (the Builders, the infrastructure, the nature of observation) becomes personal. How does GJ 6711 connect to the endgame? What does the player carry away from Stillpoint that changes how they see the rest of the Reach?
6. What's Missing
What does the sealed envelope fail to address? What questions does it raise that it doesn't answer? What needs to be added to make it load-bearing for the full game's narrative architecture?
Format
Be thorough. Be specific. Quote existing canon where relevant. Disagree where the evidence supports disagreement. This is a stress test, not a celebration. The sealed envelope survives if it can handle the pressure.
