"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table).
"Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation
caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren.

Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table
headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions,
tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable →
standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values.
Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety.

Population

The name comes from Oshima's archipelago naming tradition — "shimanami" means island waves in Japanese, evoking the chains of islands connected by bridging routes that the founding families carried in their cultural memory from three centuries back. It was given by Oshima's original extraction operators when they first established a working presence here, before anyone expected the system to become what it has become. The name has outlasted the intent.

GJ 848's F5V star is the defining physical fact of this system, and it is anomalous enough at this corridor depth that it was what drew Oshima's operators here in the first place. An F-type star is brighter and warmer than anything else in the corridor's deep east section — more luminous than Oshima's dim boundary star, far more luminous than most of what lies at this hop distance in any direction. The habitable zone sits at a comfortable distance from a star that produces genuine daylight, and the primary terrestrial body, Shimanami Main, has natural conditions that required less terraforming investment to make productive than Oshima Prime has required to remain productive. The irony that the system classified as an extraction appendage of its administrative parent has better natural conditions than the administrative parent itself has not been lost on three generations of Shimanami residents, and it is not discussed politely when Oshima officials visit.

The settlement is three hundred years old, which is by any reasonable measure no longer an outpost. The original extraction workers were Oshima-affiliated contract labor, and the earliest phase of habitation was genuinely impermanent — rotating crews, modular infrastructure, no permanent civic structures. That phase ended within the first two generations, when contract workers who had completed their terms chose to stay, when children born in the system had nowhere else to consider home, and when the practical advantages of F-type stellar conditions became apparent to anyone willing to try growing something in local soil rather than hauling it in from Oshima. What grew from that was a community with its own character, its own memory of the settling, and its own accumulated reasons to be here.

What did not change was the administrative structure. Oshima's operating charter — a renewable instrument that grants Oshima formal administrative authority over GJ 848 in exchange for resource extraction rights — has been renewed on a standing basis for three hundred years. The charter predates the permanent settlement. It was written for an extraction site staffed by rotating crews, not for a system with a native-born population, a local civic structure, and a through-route position between two established corridor systems. Oshima renews it because the mineral export income is significant and because the charter represents a formal legal claim that Oshima's Island Council is not prepared to relinquish. Shimanami tolerates it because the formal dispute would be expensive, the Commission has no meaningful presence at this hop distance to adjudicate anything, and the practical reality of daily life in the system has nothing to do with what the charter says.

The through-route topology is Shimanami's structural leverage and its defining strategic condition. Every freight and passenger movement between Oshima and Dài Lộ passes through Shimanami's gates. The transit volume is not enormous — this is a deep corridor, not a high-traffic trunk line — but it is consistent, and it makes Shimanami's transit infrastructure the effective chokepoint for the entire corridor segment. The Shimanami Transit Cooperative, which manages gate scheduling and docking facilities, has used this position carefully over the past century to negotiate favorable terms on transit fees, supply contracts, and — most significantly — to assert de facto administrative independence from Oshima in matters of gate scheduling. Oshima can object to the fees. It cannot reach Dài Lộ without Shimanami's cooperation.

The cultural texture of the system reflects its corridor position. The founding layer is Japanese in the Oshima tradition: the language is maintained, the place names follow archipelago patterns, and the community's sense of its own origin story runs through Oshima's founding families even as it diverges from Oshima's present. But Shimanami has spent three hundred years positioned between Oshima and Dài Lộ, and the Vietnamese cultural presence from Dài Lộ — the language, the commercial practices, the dietary tradition that spreads wherever traders settle — has woven itself into the system's population over multiple generations. In Shimanami's main settlement, Naminato, you can hear Japanese and Vietnamese in the same conversation and not be surprised. The Transit Cooperative operates in both languages as a matter of longstanding institutional practice. The blending is not a late development; it has been happening long enough that most Shimanami residents do not experience it as blending at all.


Supply Dependency

Shimanami's extraction operations — primarily rare-earth minerals and a smaller volume of industrial compounds — provide the export base that funds imports of manufactured goods, medical equipment, and the technical components that local manufacturing cannot yet produce at scale. The inward supply chain runs through Oshima and then to Tanaka Station; the outward commercial relationship with Dài Lộ provides an alternative source for agricultural goods and some categories of manufactured components that Dài Lộ's mature productive base generates in surplus. The existence of two supply directions — one inward through Oshima, one across to Dài Lộ — is the practical expression of Shimanami's through-route position and gives the system a supply resilience that neither Oshima nor any spur-end system at this depth could claim. Shimanami does not depend on Oshima's goodwill for its supply chain, and Oshima's Island Council knows it.


Faction Notes

The Shimanami Transit Cooperative is the most consequential institution in the system and the one whose authority Oshima's operating charter conspicuously fails to accommodate. The Cooperative manages gate scheduling, docking allocation, transit fees, and the maintenance contracts for both aperture facilities. Its leadership is elected by registered Cooperative members — predominantly the operators, pilots, and technical staff whose livelihoods depend on gate function — and it has operated with increasing independence over the past century as its fee revenues have grown to exceed the extraction sector's contribution to the local economy. The Cooperative has never formally challenged Oshima's charter. It does not need to.

The Extraction Consortium is the successor organization to Oshima's original operating apparatus — the body of extraction operators who work the rare-earth and mineral deposits under the terms of the administrative charter. Many Consortium operators have family roots going back to Oshima's founding population, and the Consortium maintains the formal relationship with Oshima's Island Council that justifies the charter's renewal. Inside Shimanami, the Consortium's political weight has declined relative to the Transit Cooperative over the past generation, a shift that its leadership has been slow to accept.

The Naminato Residents' Assembly is the system's effective municipal government — a directly elected body that handles civic services, local law, and the administrative functions that the operating charter theoretically reserves to Oshima but that Oshima has never had the physical presence to exercise. The Assembly's authority is not formally recognized by the charter, which does not contain a provision for a permanent civilian government because it was written before one existed. The Assembly operates regardless, and Oshima's officials who visit Shimanami deal with it as the practical authority because there is no one else to deal with.


Silence Topic

The charter renewal terms: the operating charter is renewed on a standing basis, but the renewal negotiations between Oshima's Island Council and Shimanami's Extraction Consortium include fee structures, resource allocation percentages, and administrative scope definitions that are not publicly disclosed. Shimanami's residents know the charter exists and know that it grants Oshima formal authority over the system; they do not know what Oshima receives in exchange for each renewal, what the Extraction Consortium has agreed to on their behalf, or what provisions in the current charter text affect their legal standing as permanent residents of a system governed by an instrument written for rotating contract labor. The Transit Cooperative has formally requested charter text disclosure on three occasions. Each request has been declined by both the Extraction Consortium and Oshima's Island Council, citing commercial confidentiality.


Narrative Hook

A member of the Naminato Residents' Assembly, preparing a legal challenge to Oshima's administrative charter on behalf of the system's permanent residents, discovers that the most recent charter renewal included a provision — never disclosed locally — that formally classifies all infrastructure built on Shimanami Main after the original extraction period as Oshima-chartered property, including the Transit Cooperative's gate facilities.


Calibration Note

F-type star at hop 8 in the east_reach is unusual and is treated as the system's defining physical characteristic — better natural habitability than either adjacent system. Through_route with two apertures between Oshima (GJ 79, hop 7, spur_end) and Dài Lộ (GJ 136, hop 8, wave_2) creates an asymmetric corridor dynamic: Shimanami is structurally positioned between a system that claims administrative authority over it and a system four centuries old that treats it as a transit stop. Wave_3 at hop 8 produces the tension described throughout this page — three hundred years is long enough to build a genuine community and not long enough to have resolved the administrative inheritance from the extraction-site era.
