Supply Dependency
The system's manufacturing base runs on ore and feedstock that comes primarily from in-system extraction — the K7V primary's habitable zone sits inside a dense inner belt of metallic asteroids that has been industrially mined for five hundred and eighty years. Processing capacity exceeds extraction capacity in most material categories, which means the shipyards bid against each other for priority access to raw feedstock and the extraction combines have never lacked customers.
What the system imports: high-grade alloys and exotic compounds for components that require tolerances the local extraction sector cannot produce cleanly — sourced primarily from Sirius and from specialist systems in the commercial mid-Reach. Agricultural inputs to feed 1.8 billion people who live mostly in orbital stations where there is no soil. Precision tooling, sensor packages, and drive components that are cheaper to import than to manufacture locally given the current industrial mix. These are real dependencies, but none are leverage points. The combines that run the extraction and processing sectors have accumulated supply agreements across enough adjacent systems that no single source can apply meaningful pressure. This was deliberate. The early industrial families understood that a manufacturing system that could be starved of feedstock was a system that could be controlled.
The other direction is where the dependency runs. The Reach's transit infrastructure — stations, gate-adjacent platforms, freight haulers, the service vessels that maintain the span gate networks — was fabricated here in overwhelming proportion. Sirius runs the Reach politically. Cygni B built what Sirius runs. The combines are not subtle about this when contract terms come up for renegotiation.
Faction Notes
The shipbuilding combines are the governance. Cygni B operates under a Syndic council structure in which the major industrial families hold seats proportional to production tonnage — a metric that has favored the same families for generations, because the capital investment required to operate a serious shipyard is not the kind of thing that gets assembled quickly. There are seven combines large enough to matter in the council chamber; another twenty operate as subcontractors, suppliers, or specialists without voting weight.
The combines are not agricultural Syndics transplanted into an industrial context. The culture is different in ways that matter. Ran's agricultural families operate on generational rhythms — seasons, harvests, long cycles of land management. Cygni B's industrial families operate on project rhythms — hull contracts, construction windows, delivery schedules measured in years not decades. This produces a different kind of combine leader: more technical, less pastoral, better at reading specifications and worse at reading the kind of slow political weather that Assembly deliberations require. The combines hire Assembly liaisons for that, and the liaisons are very good at their jobs.
The Concord Assembly has a formal delegation from Cygni B, and the delegation is respected because the Assembly would have no physical infrastructure to meet in if the combines had not built it. The relationship is not warm. The combines believe the Assembly's preference for Sirius as a contracting hub costs Cygni B margin it has earned. The Assembly believes the combines' habit of treating government procurement as a negotiation to be won rather than a public obligation to be fulfilled is a recurring governance problem. Both positions have evidence.
The Lattice Commission maintains a substantial presence because manufacturing systems generate the documentation the Commission was built to certify — safety standards, materials provenance, structural tolerances, labor classifications. The Cygni B office is technically demanding and well-funded, and its inspectors are the type who come from engineering backgrounds rather than administrative ones. Relations with the combines are functional and occasionally adversarial in ways both parties consider normal.
The Guardians of Autonomy have more genuine purchase here than they do in most core systems, because the combines' grievance about margin extraction by Assembly procurement policy maps onto the Guardians' structural critique in ways that make cooperation possible. The combine leadership does not endorse the Guardians publicly. It does not need to. The Guardians' trade policy platform in the Assembly reads, in several sections, as though it was written by someone who has spent time in a Cygni B combine's contracts office. It was.
Silence Topic
What the system does not discuss: who owns the designs.
The shipyards built the Reach's transit infrastructure, but the designs — the specifications, the engineering drawings, the accumulated technical documentation for every gate-adjacent platform and freight hauler and station module — are held in a distributed archive whose access rights were negotiated at settlement charter and have been litigated incrementally ever since. The combines own the fabrication processes. The Assembly holds certain design rights derived from the original colonial investment. The Veil Institute — which funded elements of the early gate-adjacent construction program for reasons that were never fully documented — has access claims to the architectural specifications for horizon-adjacent station infrastructure: the docking platforms, service gantries, and maintenance arrays that physically interface with the alien-built gate structures. The combines consider these claims illegitimate and have been contesting them for two hundred years. The Institute considers them essential and has never explained why.
The distinction matters. Ordinary station architecture is well-understood engineering. Horizon-adjacent architecture — the structures humans built to physically connect with alien infrastructure they do not fully understand — is something else. The design data for those interfaces contains information about the alien structures themselves: dimensional tolerances, material interactions, resonance characteristics observed during construction. What the Institute wants is not commercial design rights. It is the construction data that reveals what the builders' infrastructure does when human engineering touches it. This connects Cygni B's silence directly to Gateway's: what the Institute found at the first horizon station, and what it has learned in five centuries of studying structures that Cygni B's combines were contracted to build around.
Narrative Hook
The combines that built the Reach's gate-adjacent infrastructure hold the construction data for every structure that physically touches alien technology; the Veil Institute has been claiming access to that data for two hundred years and has never explained what it expects to find in it.
Calibration Note
governance_type: syndic at stability_index: 4 is the expected configuration for an industrial Syndic system. The combines are not a destabilizing force — they are the government. Stability-4 rather than 5 reflects the active friction between combine interests and Assembly procurement policy, the ongoing design-rights disputes, and the fact that the system's leverage (it built the Reach) cuts both ways: the combines can apply pressure, and so can anyone who controls what the combines need. It is a prosperous, functional, high-competence system with a real fault line running through its institutional architecture.
atmosphere: working_prosperity / industrial_grit is not a paradox. The population is well-compensated — the combines pay well because skilled fabrication workers are genuinely scarce across the Reach, and turnover is expensive. The grit is not poverty; it is the texture of work organized around production schedules, shift rotations, and the kind of institutional pride that comes from building things that last. Workers here will tell you, unprompted, what they built. They will tell you where it is and how long it has been running. This is not propaganda. It is the culture of people whose work is legible in the physical infrastructure of a civilization.
star_type: K7V produces a dim, red-orange primary with a narrow habitable zone. The single habitable body is a dense, high-iron world that needed minimal terraforming to support surface habitation but was never going to produce a garden world. Most of the 1.8 billion residents live in orbital infrastructure rather than on the surface. The surface settlements are industrial support hubs and supply depots, not cities in the Sirius sense. This is not experienced as a deficiency. The orbital stations are home.
