"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table).
"Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation
caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren.

Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table
headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions,
tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable →
standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values.
Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety.

Alshain exists because its star is unusual. G8IV is a subgiant — a star that has begun to exhaust its core hydrogen, expanding slowly and increasing its luminosity over time. Wave 3 settlers surveying this far out were looking for systems worth the investment, and a subgiant's expanded habitable zone, wider and more complex than a main-sequence equivalent, presented conditions that looked like agricultural potential. They were right, in the qualified way that outer-frontier agricultural assessments tend to be right: the primary habitable body is genuinely productive by frontier standards, capable of surplus food output that the corridor around it cannot grow for itself.

Alshain has therefore been a food supplier to the deep west for two hundred years. Its exports move inward through GJ 395 and Randsholm to GJ 302 and outward through GJ 4056 toward whatever is further along that path. The system does not grow wealthy on this — the transit costs absorb most of the margin — but it is not dependent either, which is the meaningful distinction at hop 11.

The "var" designation — variable — complicates everything. The star's luminosity is not constant. The variation is not dramatic by stellar standards; it does not render the habitable zone uninhabitable. But it is real, it has a period of approximately eleven years, and agricultural planning requires accounting for it. The founding generation developed a cultivation calendar that anticipates the luminosity cycle. That calendar is now one of the oldest continuously-maintained documents on the system, updated and republished by the agricultural council every season for two hundred years.

Faction Notes

Alshain's governance is the kind that develops when a community has been looking after itself for a very long time without interference. The Agricultural Council is the primary decision-making body — originally an administrative body for managing the cultivation calendar, it gradually absorbed governance functions as the founding settlement matured and no other institutional structure emerged to take them. The council is elected by sector, meets monthly, and has developed a body of customary practice that functions as a constitution without being one. No one has tried to write it down formally. The founding generation, several of whom are still alive, have expressed no interest in formalization. The customary practice is working; writing it down creates surfaces for argument.

Alshain is beyond the Compact of Westphalia's organizational reach. The Compact's network centers around hops 6-9; Alshain at hop 11 is not a Compact member and has never been formally approached. This is not ideological — Alshain's council has no particular objection to the Compact's principles. It is geographic. The Compact is not the relevant political framework when the nearest significant political structure is eleven hops away. The Assembly is equally irrelevant. Alshain's last recorded Assembly compliance interaction was a survey visit that noted the system as "functionally autonomous, cultivation-focused, low-risk for intervention" and recommended no action.

The subgiant variable star produces a specific ambient character that defines the system's aesthetic and psychological texture. Every resident knows where in the eleven-year luminosity cycle they are. The harvest seasons when the star is near its brighter phase are celebrated; the leaner years when the output is reduced are managed with the cooperative competence of a community that has done this before. Time in Alshain is counted in stellar cycles as readily as in standard years.

Silence Topic

What Alshain does not discuss externally: the variable star's long-term trajectory.

A subgiant is not static. It is evolving toward the red giant phase on a timescale measured in hundreds of millions of years, which is irrelevant to any current inhabitant's concerns. But the luminosity variation has been documented for two hundred years of Alshain habitation, and the variation amplitude has been increasing slowly — not dramatically, not urgently, but measurably over the full record. The agricultural council's internal technical assessment, last updated thirty years ago, described the trend as "within expected subgiant evolutionary parameters" and "not requiring response within the planning horizon." That assessment has not been updated. The council's position is that updating it would produce a document that required action, and action on a stellar evolution timescale is not a governance priority for a community with immediate agricultural cycles to manage. The calculation is defensible. The suppressed assessment is still in the archive.

Narrative Hook

Two hundred years of careful cultivation calendars built around a variable star whose variation amplitude has been quietly increasing — and the community that built them has no particular interest in asking what that means over the next century.

Calibration Note

wave_3 at hop 11 reflects genuinely early frontier-push settlement driven by the subgiant's unusual habitability signature — surveyors noted the expanded habitable zone and the agricultural potential, and a wave_3 agricultural cooperative took the offer. The G8IVvar classification is the system's defining unusual element: a subgiant is rare in the gate network, and its evolutionary status creates a long-range narrative pressure that is appropriate for a deep-west system. through_route at hop 11 means Alshain is on the chain toward something further out — GJ 4056 beyond and back toward Randsholm. The name "Alshain" is a real Arabic star name (Beta Aquilae) and was already assigned to this system in the astronomical catalog; it is kept here as an example of a pre-settlement designation that stuck, a common enough occurrence for the handful of stars with traditional proper names.
