"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table). "Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren. Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions, tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable → standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values. Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety. Overview
Calloway Reach was settled 400 years ago on a K-type star at the northern extent of the Braemar-Dunbar loop. The system's founders — Scottish in heritage, practical in disposition — arrived with agricultural equipment, seed stock, and a portable still. The still was not the last.
The primary body is cold and dim under its K-type star, with a gravity slightly below Earth-standard that settlers found kind to aging joints and unkind to precise calibration work. The terrain is rolling, dark-soiled, wet at lower elevations and windswept at higher ones. The founders planted grain — a cold-adapted barley variant that had been modified through several generations of corridor travel to tolerate dim-light growing seasons — and discovered that the combination of local mineral water, the specific yeast populations that developed in the cold damp air of the low valleys, and the grain variety they had brought produced, after fermentation and distillation and patient aging in sealed casks, something that tasted unlike anything the corridor had offered before.
Calloway single malt is now 400 years old as a tradition. The first recorded commercial export occurred 360 years ago, when a passing trader carried three casks to Braemar (GJ 475) and reported that they had sold immediately and that buyers were asking for more. The distillery tradition has never stopped since. There are currently eleven operating distilleries in the Calloway Reach system, ranging from the founding-era Calloway House operation — still family-owned, still using the original still design in the original low valley — to newer operations experimenting with grain variations and aging vessel types.
What Calloway single malt has is specificity. The water chemistry is not reproducible elsewhere; the yeast culture — now 400 years descended from the founding population — has diverged from any off-system equivalent; the grain variety, adapted to Calloway growing conditions over four centuries, cannot be grown at comparable quality anywhere else in the corridor without the specific mineral profile of Calloway soil. Attempts to license the production method to inward systems have produced technically competent but culinarily distinct results, which local distillers describe, with practiced politeness, as "fine products in their own tradition."
Calloway single malt trades as far inward as Wolf 359 territory. At those distances it is a premium imported luxury. At Braemar and Dunbar (GJ 3991), it is just what people drink.
The wealth this has produced is genuinely unexpected for a hop-6 loop member. Calloway Reach's per-system income metrics are among the highest in the outer north_reach. The community remains modest in self-presentation — the distillery culture prizes restraint and patience as virtues, and these have transferred to civic character — but the infrastructure is well-maintained, the educational institutions are well-funded, and the medical services are unusually good for a system at this distance from the institutional core.
Economy
Whisky production and export dominate. The eleven distilleries employ roughly 15% of the workforce directly and support a substantially larger fraction indirectly through agriculture, coopering, warehousing, and the transport logistics of managing aged stock. The aging cycle — most Calloway single malts are held for 12 to 20 years before release — requires capital patience and sophisticated inventory management.
Agricultural production beyond the distillery grain supply is adequate for local food needs. The loop topology connecting to Braemar (GJ 475) and Dunbar (GJ 3991) provides two routing options for export, which the distillery trade has used to maintain supply continuity even when one gate is under maintenance.
Supply Dependency
Calloway Reach is self-sufficient in grain and water. Cooperage materials — specific wood types for aging casks — are imported from Dunbar, which has appropriate managed forestry. Gate infrastructure components route through Braemar from inward corridor suppliers. The distillery operations depend on no single inward system for critical inputs, a resilience that developed over centuries of managing long aging cycles that cannot be interrupted.
Faction Notes
The Distillers' Council — a collective governance body representing all eleven operating distilleries. Has formal advisory status in local government and informal authority over anything touching land use, water rights, or agricultural policy. The Council operates by consensus and is genuinely slow, which frustrates those who want rapid decisions and reassures those who have watched rapid decisions damage things.
Calloway House — the founding distillery, family-owned in the fifth generation. Has a ceremonial significance in local culture that exceeds its current market share. The family's current head, Ewan Calloway-Marsh, is 70 years old and widely expected to be the last of his line to run the operation; his children have other interests.
The Grain Alliance — the agricultural cooperative representing the farming families that supply the distilleries. Has periodic disputes with the Distillers' Council over price setting, and has historically lost those disputes, though the margin has narrowed as the Alliance has become more organizationally sophisticated.
Silence Topic
At least two of the eleven distilleries have been quietly approached by inward investors proposing partial acquisition structures that would expand production and extend distribution networks at the cost of local ownership dilution. The Distillers' Council does not know. The Grain Alliance does not know. The approaches have been kept between the individual distillery owners and the investors, and the owners have not yet collectively disclosed that the offers are happening — though at least three of them are aware that others have been approached.
Narrative Hook
A Grain Alliance accountant reconciling inter-distillery supply contracts has found a payment structure that suggests one of the founding distilleries is already partially owned by an off-system holding company — the ownership transfer registered somewhere that Calloway Reach's local records don't index.
Calibration Note
The K: classification in the READ-ONLY data indicates an uncertain or approximate K-type spectral classification, consistent with the system's position in the star map as a relatively recently catalogued outer reach system. The world character described here — cold, dim, wet valleys, rolling dark-soiled terrain — is consistent with K-type stellar conditions and the 400-year agricultural settlement history.
