Supply Dependency
Fremantle does not produce at volume. Its economic function is coordination: it is the oldest civilian infrastructure junction on the north_reach branch, the point where wave_2 survey routes converged into something resembling a logistics network, and it has never stopped being that. Gate Corporation maintains its north_reach maintenance academy here — not at Wolf 359, which is the more prestigious posting, but here, where the gate infrastructure is old enough that the training value is irreplaceable. Three centuries of repair records for this class of aperture exist in Fremantle's institutional archives and nowhere else.
The system's primary imports are technical personnel and components from the inner core. Its primary exports are certified gate technicians, institutional compliance filings, and the kind of procedural memory that accumulates in a system where the same administrative functions have been performed by successive generations of the same families for four hundred years. Fremantle's contribution to the north_reach's operational continuity is not dramatic. It is structural.
Faction Notes
The Gate Corporation's presence in Fremantle is the deepest anywhere in the north_reach outside of Wolf 359. The maintenance academy trains gate ferry crews, aperture calibration specialists, and the field technicians who rotate out to junction systems two or three hops further north. This gives Fremantle a cosmopolitan texture unusual for a system its size — academy cohorts cycle in from across the Reach, stay two to four years, and depart. The local population is substantially older than the average for the corridor; the people who stay are the ones who chose to.
The Assembly's administrative presence is strong and largely self-perpetuating. Fremantle filed its colonial charter in the second wave and has maintained unbroken institutional compliance since then. The local governance body — technically a parliamentary council, functionally a council of families that have held seats since the third generation of settlement — does not advertise how thoroughly it has merged with the Assembly's regional administrative structure. There is no meaningful distinction, at Fremantle, between local governance and the Assembly's north_reach administrative apparatus.
Silence Topic
What is not discussed at Fremantle is the pre-academy era: the forty years between initial settlement and the Gate Corporation's establishment of formal training infrastructure here, during which gate maintenance on this branch was handled by contractors operating under arrangements that no institutional record accounts for completely. The contractors were effective. The gates held. The records of what they actually did, what access they were granted, and what they may have filed for their own purposes are either lost or classified under a Gate Corporation proprietary designation that the academy's current administration does not have authority to review.
Narrative Hook
The oldest gate maintenance records in the north_reach are here, and two generations of academy archivists have quietly noted that certain sections of the earliest logs are inconsistent with what the apertures actually look like today.
Calibration Note
wave_2 at hop_distance: 4 with junction topology makes Fremantle structurally important without being a named power center. Its M5 stellar class is unremarkable — the habitable body orbits very close in, as is typical for M-dwarf settlement — but the system's value was never its physical characteristics. It was the gate convergence point, and four centuries of institutional investment have made the convergence the reality rather than an accident of topology.
