jpmschweitzerandClaude Opus 4.7 25eb8bd096 content(wiki): purge v0.1 Sova/Van Maanen residue (#865)
Spring-cleaning accumulated v0.1 vertical-slice residue across the
wiki. Scope per Jeroen's pre-decisions on 2026-04-21:

- Delete outright: wiki/star-systems/GJ-35/sova/ subtree (5 files +
2 dirs) — v0.1 Station Sova / Transit District content.
- Strip example blocks in authoring guides and _templates/ that
cited dropped v0.1 NPCs (Kael Davan, Sera Venn, Nils Davan, Devra,
Torek, Renn, Pell, Tav, Lera Sessik, Sabel). Replaced with short
"v0.1 examples removed — D-122" notes pointing authors to the
  active NPC roster.
- Rewrite canonical-lore references file-by-file: faction pages,
technology pages, contraband pages, concepts pages, corp pages
  that cited v0.1 names/places. Preserve institutional/structural
  content, drop specific-name citations.
- Commission name drift: replace "Concord Commission" and "Assembly
Commission" with "the Lattice Commission" (D-193) throughout.
- Van Maanen's Star cultural references: the canonical in-game name
is Vuurkloof. "Van Maanen's Star" is retained only as an
astronomical designation (glossary + GJ-35 Calibration Note).
All cultural/system references converted to Vuurkloof across
  culture-authoring-guide, cultural-generation-guide, founder-gates,
  and star-system adjacent-system descriptions.
- Strip `v0.1` from faction/triangle frontmatter tags (8 files).
- wiki/triangles/hub-power.md and wiki/factions/the-ring.md:
rewritten using role-name exemplars (Ring Coordinator / Shift
Supervisor / THE FRIEND) instead of named v0.1 NPCs. Triangle
pattern preserved as a structural reference.

Also applies drive-by Commission drift fixes and minor cross-ref
updates to canonical corps (gate-corporation, mastroianni-vehicle-group,
stalownia-kowalski, prometheus-labs, ferreira-monteiro, vins-de-grand-vide,
and 13 others).

Supply Dependency

Karoo does not produce much and does not need to. Its economic identity is transit and maintenance — the system sits at the midpoint of the south_reach corridor between Caparica at hop 4 and Vuurkloof at hop 6, and transit logistics are what the system does. Gate Corporation operates a maintenance node here: not a full operational base, but a servicing facility with the technical capacity to handle aperture calibration, gate ferry overhaul, and the scheduled maintenance operations that through-route positions require. The node employs a rotating staff cadre and anchors the small permanent settlement that exists at Karoo at all.

Light manufacturing followed the transit function. A fabrication cluster near the Gate Corp node produces replacement parts and maintenance consumables, supplying the node itself and selling surplus to freight operators transiting the corridor. The cluster is not large enough to make Karoo an industrial system in any meaningful sense — it serves the maintenance economy that the Gate Corp presence created, not a standalone export market. What Karoo imports is everything else: food from Caparica, consumer goods and raw materials through the Altair corridor. The through-route topology means the system always has freight moving through it; extracting value from that movement is the permanent economic opportunity the Karoo settlement has worked with for as long as it has existed.

Faction Notes

Gate Corporation's presence is the organizing fact of Karoo's institutional life. The maintenance node has a station director, a technical operations team, and a small administrative staff — all Gate Corp employees on rotation from the corporation's wider network. The director holds formal authority over the node's operations; in practice, the director's relationship with the local settlement council determines how smoothly the system functions, and directors who treat the council as a subordinate body rather than a partner tend to have difficult rotations. The community that grew around the node has been there for longer than any individual Gate Corp employee, and it knows this.

The settlement council handles non-Gate Corp civil administration: residential allocation, local commercial licensing, dispute resolution. Its authority does not extend to the node itself or the Gate Corp fabrication cluster, which operate under corporate policy rather than local governance. The boundary between these jurisdictions is clear in formal terms and continuously contested in practice — particularly over environmental and noise standards near the residential districts, which the council wants enforced and the node's operations team wants treated as operational necessities.

The Guardians of Autonomy have a presence in the manufacturing cluster's labor districts, which is predictable given Gate Corp's employment practices. The relationship between the local Guardians chapter and the settlement council is cooperative: both institutions have an interest in maintaining local leverage against a corporate operator that does not need Karoo specifically — it needs a through-route maintenance node, and there are other systems where a node could be placed if the local environment became sufficiently difficult. The council and the Guardians both understand this dynamic. They do not discuss it directly.

Silence Topic

What Karoo does not discuss: whether the Gate Corporation node is a permanent fixture or a facility that could be relocated if traffic patterns shifted.

The south_reach corridor's traffic volume depends on the systems beyond it having economic output worth hauling. If the corridor's deep systems atrophied — if Kumasi's trading function eroded or Rionegro's agricultural remnant finally fell below the threshold of export viability — the freight volumes through Karoo would decline. A through-route maintenance node that is handling reduced traffic becomes a maintenance node that Gate Corporation's allocation committee might consolidate with another facility. No one at Karoo speaks this possibility aloud, because speaking it aloud would acknowledge that the settlement's existence is contingent on economic conditions two and three hops away that Karoo cannot control. The settlement was built around the node. The node is not built around the settlement.

Narrative Hook

The community that built itself around a Gate Corporation maintenance node has never formally asked whether the node would stay if the freight stopped coming.

Calibration Note

star_type: G0V at 28.3 light-years makes Karoo's primary a near-solar-type star — slightly hotter and more luminous than Sol, with a habitable zone broadly comparable. This is not a hostile stellar environment, and the habitable body's conditions are workable rather than punishing. The settlement's character does not come from environmental adversity; it comes from economic contingency. The system is physically comfortable and institutionally precarious. That combination produces a particular kind of community psychology: people who settled here voluntarily, under reasonable conditions, and have developed a chronic low-level awareness that reasonable conditions are not the same as stable ones.

gate_topology: through_route with 2 apertures is the configuration that gave Karoo its economic function — one aperture toward Caparica and the south_reach inner corridor, one aperture toward Vuurkloof and the corridor beyond. Through-routes are inherently transit-focused; they have no topological reason to be destinations in themselves. Karoo has made itself a destination by providing a service that through-route traffic needs.
