"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table).
"Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation
caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren.

Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table
headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions,
tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable →
standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values.
Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety.

Supply Dependency

Ran does not import food. This distinction — obvious, unremarkable to anyone who lives here — is the quiet fact that shapes everything else about the system's political character.

Two habitable planets, both worked. The inner world, Kallast, carries the grain belt that made Ran's reputation: amber continental shelves broken by irrigation channels wide enough to see from low orbit, serviced by a dense network of processing nodes and freight elevators that have been running continuously for five centuries. The outer habitable body, Vethis, is cooler and wetter — high-protein aquaculture, specialty crops, the niche products that command premium rates at the capital's import terminals. Between them the system produces surplus. Not notionally, not optimistically — structurally, consistently, by design. The colonial charter that established Ran was written to produce surplus. Earth's planners were thorough about that, at least.

The system's manufacturing sector exists because you cannot run a five-hundred-year agricultural operation without things that need building and fixing. Heavy equipment fabrication, processing infrastructure, chemical synthesis for soil management, freight tonnage for the runs to Gateway and onward. Manufacturing follows agriculture the way maintenance follows use.

What Ran imports: refined fuels from the outer belt operations, certain precision components from the capital's industrial tier, and, increasingly, the kind of information services that any large civilian population eventually requires. None of these are critical. None create leverage.

The leverage runs the other direction. Sirius cannot grow its own food. The freight consortia that move Ran's exports to the capital — two hops, Ran to Gateway to Sirius, running on a schedule that has not been disrupted in living memory — understand what they carry in terms that have nothing to do with tonnage or tariff rates.

Faction Notes

The Concord Assembly has a presence on Ran in the way that weather has a presence — ambient, acknowledged, occasionally relevant, and not what people mean when they talk about who runs things.

The agricultural combines are what people mean. They are organized as Syndics, formally, which gives them standing in the Assembly's deliberative framework and a seat at trade negotiations. In practice the Syndic structure here preceded its formal recognition by the Assembly and would persist without it. The combines are not pretending to be something they are not. They are the oldest continuous institutions in the system, and they have been managing agricultural land for longer than the Assembly has been deciding how to classify it.

The major combines — there are seven that matter, and another dozen that matter in specific sectors — operate with a degree of coordination that stops just short of what the Assembly's cartel provisions would require them to disclose. This is not an accident. The legal architecture of that coordination has been refined over generations by people who understood exactly where the line was drawn and why the line was drawn there. The line is respected. The coordination happens anyway.

The Lattice Commission is active. Food safety, trade standards, weight-and-measure certifications, the long audit trails that move-of-record freight requires — all of this is Commission territory, and the Commission takes it seriously. Ran's Commission office is one of the busier regional posts, and one of the more technically demanding. It is not where Commission careers are made, because nothing dramatic happens here. It is where Commission operatives learn to do the work carefully, without drama, for years.

The Guardians of Autonomy maintain a small office that has been maintained by the same family for three generations. They are treated with the provincial tolerance extended to any legacy institution that no longer causes trouble. They issue statements about trade policy. The statements are thorough. They are read by the people who need to know what the Guardians are thinking, and by almost no one else.

Silence Topic

What Ran does not discuss: who benefits from the stability.

The system is stable. Productivity is consistent. The population is prosperous by Reach standards — not wealthy the way the capital's service tier is wealthy, but fed, housed, employed, and embedded in social structures that have not changed in two hundred years. The combines pay reasonable wages and provide housing on the land they work, and have been doing this long enough that the arrangement is simply the shape of employment on Ran, not a policy decision anyone evaluates.

What this means for social mobility — for who ends up working the land their grandparents worked, who ends up owning the land their grandparents owned, and what the mechanism is by which one becomes the other — is the question that prosperity makes comfortable not to ask. The combine families that held land at Wave 1 settlement still hold land. The populations that arrived as agricultural workers in Wave 2 and Wave 3 are still, largely, working it. The system is not violent about this. It is not obvious about it. It is simply the case, generation by generation, in a system with high stability and low structural incentive to redistribute anything.

The Assembly has no active mandate to examine it. The Commission's jurisdiction covers process integrity, not land tenure. The combines do not fund research into the question. Independent scholars who have written carefully documented analyses of Wave 1 land concentration patterns on Ran have found that their work is received politely, cited occasionally, and does not change anything.

Narrative Hook

The system that feeds the Reach has not had a labor dispute in sixty years; the last one ended when the combine that caused it was quietly absorbed by its three nearest neighbors within a single fiscal quarter.

Calibration Note

dominant_faction: syndic at stability_index: 5 can read as paradoxical — Syndics in other contexts are associated with commercial volatility. On Ran the Syndic structure is the stability mechanism. The agricultural combines have had five centuries to formalize their coordination, and the result is a faction that does not have internal conflicts because the internal conflicts were resolved long ago, with the resolutions embedded in operational practice rather than policy documents. This is a stable equilibrium, not a managed tension.

earth_alignment: earth_indifferent is straightforward and worth noting precisely because it is so clean. Ran is two hops from Sol and has no direct gate connection to the Earth-adjacent corridor. The combines were not deeply invested in the Earth relationship before secession and are not deeply invested in its absence now. Earth does not buy grain from Ran. Ran does not need Earth to buy its grain. The indifference is structural, not ideological.

habitability_profile: garden_multi with K2V primary is the physically expected outcome. A K-type star's habitable zone is narrow but stable; the zone produces consistent solar input without the ultraviolet exposure that compromises surface agriculture under brighter stars. Ran was not an accident of settlement. It was a deliberate choice, made by people who understood what they were choosing.
