jpmschweitzerandClaude Opus 4.6 db241b88bd refactor(schema): rename biome_summary to planet_class (D-188)
"Biome" describes per-zone vegetation classification (Whittaker table).
"Planet class" describes overall planetary character. The conflation
caused the planet generator to misclassify ~270 bodies as barren.

Scope: systems.db column, schema SQL, Rust atlas code, wiki table
headers (Biome → Class), atlas proposal JSONs, all docs/decisions,
tooling scripts. Also normalizes atmosphere vocabulary (breathable →
standard) and expands planet class mapping to all 26 wiki values.
Unknown classes default to temperate for modder safety.

The name means crossing. Not a destination — the point between destinations. The founders who arrived four hundred years ago, carrying south_reach cooperative traditions out of the same Confluência emigration wave, chose the word deliberately. They had come to a junction, and they understood what that meant: this was the place where south_reach became legible to the core, and where the core became accessible to the south_reach. They built accordingly.

GJ 1156 is a K5V star, close and warm, its orange light almost identical to Confluência's own. At 19.3 light years from Gateway, it sits at hop 3 — deep enough into the settled Reach that the Assembly maintains real institutional weight here, close enough to the south_reach corridor that Confluência's cooperative norms are the water in which locals swim. The habitable world is a place of long coastlines and moderate seasons, geologically settled, well-watered. The community that grew here did not arrive expecting to leave. Four centuries later, they have not.

What Travessia became is the Reach's most important commercial translation point. South_reach cooperative trade operates on norms — collective invoicing, supplier-cooperative relationships, rotating price agreements — that Assembly commercial standards were not designed to accommodate. When south_reach goods cross into the core market, or when core investment capital flows outward toward Confluência's guilds, the transaction has to become legible in both frameworks simultaneously. Travessia's bonded warehouse district grew up to perform exactly that function. Customs brokers here do not simply clear freight. They repackage commercial relationships — converting cooperative manifests into Assembly-standard documentation, structuring cross-framework contracts so that both parties are satisfied the terms mean what they expect them to mean.

Four hundred years of translation work has made Travessia genuinely fluent in both commercial languages. It has also made Travessia, in certain quiet ways, dependent on the gap never closing. A junction ceases to be a junction if the two sides it connects become fully interoperable.

Economy

The transit and customs brokerage function generates the system's primary institutional revenue and employs a significant share of the professional population. Travessia's bonded warehouse district is a major origination point for southward-bound core capital and northward-bound south_reach exports. South_reach cultural products — cooperative-made manufactured goods, agricultural specialties, Confluência-adjacent craft production — first reach the core market through Travessia, and the brokers here have developed a sophisticated understanding of what core buyers will value and what will require explanation.

The second major economic institution is not a brokerage. It is a grocery chain.

Mercado Travessia — known throughout the Reach simply as Mercado — began three centuries ago as the retail annex of one of the bonded warehouse cooperatives in the district. The original logic was straightforward: goods that didn't clear on commercial contracts were offered to the local population at cost. The annex grew. The warehouse cooperative recognized the distribution infrastructure they had built for freight clearance was also excellent infrastructure for running a supply chain. The first off-system Mercado opened at a core corridor station roughly two hundred and eighty years ago, positioned near a gate terminal with reliable schedules — the same kind of transit logistics reasoning that governed their freight operations.

Mercado now operates across the Reach from hop 2 to hop 7. Its storefronts are immediately recognizable: the bright orange of the founding cooperative's color, derived from Confluência's K-type daylight. It maintains a hub-and-spoke distribution model keyed tightly to gate schedules, headquartered at Travessia because the founders understood, and their successors have never forgotten, that controlling the distribution network requires understanding transit. The procurement operation carries a Confluência heritage throughout — cooperative supplier relationships, Portuguese-language product categories still used as internal classification, a preference for south_reach producers that is not formally written into the charter but is deeply embedded in the buying team's culture.

On Mercado's spirits shelf: Calloway whisky, sourced through their north_reach purchasing office. On the prepared foods tier: Dagat Blue label goods, the canned fisheries products out of the oceanic systems. Mercado is, for many core residents, their primary ongoing contact with south_reach food culture, south_reach cooperative production, south_reach ways of organizing what a community consumes. They do not think about it in those terms. They think about it in terms of price and quality and whether the orange-fronted store near the gate terminal carries what they need before departure.

Supply Dependency

Travessia is not a producing system in the primary sense. It manufactures services: brokerage, customs documentation, logistics coordination, and retail distribution management. Raw goods pass through in volume. What leaves the system's accounts is not freight — it is the administrative work that makes freight move correctly between incompatible frameworks. The population is professional-class, educated, transit-literate. Food production is adequate but not export-capable; the system imports agricultural surplus from Confluência's guilds and, increasingly, from Mercado's own south_reach supplier network, which sometimes supplies back into Travessia at the hub end. The gate infrastructure — four apertures, continuous high-volume throughput — requires specialist maintenance staff drawing components from core corridor suppliers via Tessera connections.

Faction Notes

The Customs Brokers' Guild is the oldest established institution in the system, predating the Mercado operation by nearly a century. It is not a cooperative in the Confluência sense — it is a credentialing body with licensing authority over commercial documentation practitioners. In practice, it is the system's most powerful single institution, because the Guild's interpretation of what constitutes valid cross-framework documentation determines what can and cannot be cleared through the bonded warehouses. Guild leadership has historically cultivated careful relationships with both Assembly commercial standards offices and the Confluência Guild Delegate Council, and has consistently opposed any formal harmonization of those standards on the grounds that harmonization is a matter for Assembly deliberation, not bilateral arrangement. The practical effect of that position is to preserve the translation gap the Guild exists to service.

Mercado Travessia (corporate headquarters) maintains a political presence that is distinct from but connected to the Brokers' Guild. Mercado's procurement scale and its relationships with south_reach cooperative suppliers give it considerable informal influence over how south_reach goods are documented for core market entry. The boundary between Mercado's commercial interests and the Guild's standard-setting function is less clean than either institution's formal charter suggests.

The Assembly Regional Compliance Office has expanded its Travessia presence steadily over the past century as south_reach trade volume has grown. Its relationship with the Brokers' Guild is formally cooperative and quietly adversarial — the Compliance Office periodically advances proposals for documentation standard updates that would shift interpretation authority from Guild certification toward Assembly administrative determination. The Guild contests these through the Registry process at Tessera. Each contested determination is archived there. The accumulation is slow.

Silence Topic

Travessia maintains the translation gap between south_reach cooperative commercial norms and Assembly standards with genuine professional expertise. What is not discussed publicly is the degree to which that expertise has, over four centuries, produced a documentation framework that is specifically legible to the Guild and specifically opaque to anyone approaching it from outside.

The bonded warehouse documentation practices that have accumulated here are technically compliant with both frameworks — compliant enough that no challenge has succeeded. They are not, however, neutral. The particular ways that cooperative manifests are translated into Assembly-standard documentation consistently round certain quantities in particular directions, classify certain categories of cooperative relationship in ways that the originating cooperatives would not recognize, and produce customs valuations that have, over time, been more favorable to inward-flowing capital than outward-flowing cooperative exports. Whether this accumulated drift is conscious policy, institutional habit, or the natural sediment of four centuries of individually reasonable documentation decisions, no outside auditor has been given the access required to determine. The Guild does not grant external audit access to documentation frameworks that are by its charter protected as certified professional practice.

Narrative Hook

A mid-career Mercado procurement analyst has discovered that her team's south_reach supplier classification database contains a ghost category — a documentation tier that does not appear in any public Mercado charter, routes through a bonded warehouse sub-account registered in GJ 33, and has been quietly clearing shipments for at least thirty years.

Calibration Note

The junction topology with wave_2 settlement at hop 3 is consistent with Travessia's founding logic. Wave_2 settlers explicitly selected high-connectivity systems for functions requiring bilateral access, and a system positioned between the south_reach's dominant hub at Confluência (hop 4) and the core's institutional hub at Tessera (hop 2) provided precisely the structural position the translation function required. Four apertures — connecting to Tessera, Confluência, and the outer south_reach corridor toward GJ 33 and GJ 299 — represent the minimum viable junction topology for the system's role: two inward connections, two outward.

The K5V stellar match with Confluência's K4 Ve is relevant to local self-image. Travessia's light is close enough to Confluência's that south_reach visitors experience the system as immediately familiar, which Travessia's civic identity leans into. Core visitors find the light slightly warmer than expected, which is a known and gentle orientation tool the system's hospitality sector deploys without irony.
