Overview

Lattice-grade material — the exotic mineral matrix that has the structural properties required for neural interface substrates and gate component fabrication — is not found everywhere. It is found where the specific geological formation conditions that produce it happen to coincide with accessible asteroid or planetary subsurface environments. In the east reach, those conditions exist. In most of the rest of the Reach, they do not.

Takamori Lattice Works was established at Dài Lộ specifically because of the east reach's lattice-grade material geography. The company sources raw material from the corridor's certified deposits — primarily through relationships with Rare Vein Survey, which holds the most comprehensive characterization of east reach lattice deposits — and processes it into the lattice substrate that Prometheus Labs uses for implant hardware and that Gate Corporation requires for gate component fabrication.

The processed substrate, unlike the raw material, can be shipped reach-wide. The value-add of processing — from raw ore to refined substrate that meets Prometheus and Gate Corp specifications — is substantial, and it is what makes Takamori's position in the supply chain commercially significant rather than merely geographically convenient.


Origin

The founding family — the Takamori family, Japanese-heritage engineers who arrived at Dài Lộ in the second wave_3 period — came with materials science expertise rather than mining backgrounds. Their initial work at Dài Lộ was developing the processing methodology that converts raw lattice-grade ore into the substrate forms that downstream manufacturers require. The raw material had been known in the corridor for two generations; nobody had developed the processing step at commercial scale.

The technical challenge of lattice substrate processing is not in the extraction but in the refinement: the lattice structure that gives the material its properties is fragile at the molecular level and can be degraded by processing steps that would be routine for other materials. The Takamori family's first decade was spent developing a low-stress refinement process that preserved the lattice structure through to finished substrate. The resulting methodology is proprietary. It is the foundation on which TLW's commercial position rests.


Operations

Substrate processing: Takamori's core operation converts raw lattice-grade ore into three substrate grades — standard (for industrial applications), precision (for drive cores and gate components), and neural-grade (for implant hardware). Each grade requires progressively more careful processing and commands progressively higher prices.

Drive core production: TLW produces finished drive cores for transit vehicles and freight haulers — assembling the propulsion component that uses lattice substrate as its key material. This vertical integration captures more value than selling substrate to drive core manufacturers, and it gives TLW direct customer relationships with fleet operators who would otherwise be purchasing through intermediaries.

East Corridor Substrate: TLW's standard substrate grade, sold under the East Corridor Substrate brand, has achieved Commission certification as a reference-standard substrate. The certification was contested by inner-corridor substrate producers who argued that TLW's east reach production did not meet the traceability standards required for Commission certification. TLW prevailed after a three-year arbitration. The victory consolidated TLW's reach-wide market access.


Political Relationships

Prometheus Labs: The largest buyer of TLW's neural-grade substrate. Prometheus Labs' implant hardware manufacturing requires neural-grade substrate at a scale that TLW must plan production around. The relationship is commercially significant — Prometheus represents a material fraction of TLW's revenue — and strategically sensitive. TLW has no alternative buyer at comparable scale for neural-grade substrate; Prometheus has no alternative supplier with comparable volume and certification quality.

Gate Corporation: Neural-grade and precision-grade substrate both feed into gate component fabrication. Gate Corporation's procurement relationship with TLW is more distant than the Prometheus Labs relationship — Gate Corp sources through multiple substrate suppliers — but TLW's east reach certification and processing methodology give it a quality advantage that has made it a preferred supplier for Gate Corp's east corridor maintenance operations.

Rare Vein Survey: The geological survey relationship that identifies which east reach deposits are worth sourcing from. TLW is one of Rare Vein Survey's largest survey clients in the east corridor. The relationship involves RVS conducting site assessments for TLW and TLW receiving first-refusal rights on commercial claim development at sites that RVS identifies as suitable. The first-refusal arrangement is commercially standard but gives TLW an information advantage over competitors who rely on Commission geological registry records rather than private survey relationships.

The Dài Lộ Tham Quan: The governing body at Dài Lộ — effectively independent of Assembly authority — views TLW as the system's primary economic asset. The relationship is cooperative: TLW provides the tax base, Tham Quan provides the operational independence that TLW values for not being subjected to the same Assembly regulatory framework that inner-corridor substrate producers operate under. Neither party has articulated this arrangement in any document that would embarrass either of them.


What They Don't Talk About

The processing methodology IP.

Takamori's substrate processing methodology is the company's most valuable asset — more valuable than the ore deposits it sources from, more valuable than the processing equipment, more valuable than the customer relationships. It is the intellectual property that cannot be replicated without the Takamori family's accumulated process knowledge.

TLW has never committed this methodology to any documentation system that exists outside the company's secured internal records. The methodology lives in the process knowledge of the current generation's processing engineers — all of whom are Takamori family members or individuals whose employment contracts include specific provisions about what happens if they leave. The provisions have never been tested in legal proceedings because no former TLW employee has ever disclosed the methodology. The mechanism that produces this outcome is not a legal document. It is a social arrangement that the Takamori family has maintained for three generations.


Gameplay Relevance

TLW is the east reach's most strategically significant manufacturer — the chokepoint between the east reach's unique geological resources and the implant hardware that the rest of the Reach's Perpetual-class population depends on. A disruption to TLW's substrate supply cascades to Prometheus Labs' implant production and to gate component fabrication.

The processing methodology is the rarest kind of institutional secret: one that exists nowhere in writing and nowhere except in the minds of a specific family. What happens to TLW if the Takamori family's transmission fails — if the current generation's knowledge is lost before the next generation learns it — is a catastrophe scenario that TLW's leadership thinks about and does not discuss.
