Hangang Studio
Type: Corporation — Media Platform and Archive Catalogue Service Also Known As: Hangang Status: Canonical Scope: East reach primary; inner corridor catalogue distribution secondary Headquarters: Songjiang (GJ 625) — east reach, 4 hops from Gateway Classification: Sub-Syndic media enterprise; streaming, archive licensing, and cultural preservation
Overview
The east reach's cultural production — films, music, visual art, immersive media — is scattered across systems without a coherent distribution infrastructure. What exists in one system may be entirely inaccessible two hops away. Hangang Studio was built to solve this: a platform that aggregates east reach cultural content into a searchable, streamable archive and distributes it across the corridor. The ambition is genuine and the execution is substantial. Hangang's catalogue is the most comprehensive aggregation of east reach cultural production available anywhere in the corridor, and for communities whose own cultural output they couldn't previously access outside their home system, the platform is genuinely valuable.
The commercial model that sustains this is licensing: content owners license their work to Hangang for distribution; Hangang pays licensing fees and collects subscription revenue from the corridor communities who use the service. Where this model functions as described, it works for everyone. The platform's problem is what happens when licensing agreements lapse during the extended renegotiation periods that multi-system rights management requires.
Origin
Hangang Studio was founded sixteen years ago by a media technology entrepreneur named Cho Minju who had been working in network services at Songjiang and had identified that the east reach's cultural content was distributed in a pattern that made more sense from the perspective of individual system economies than from the perspective of a corridor audience. Each system had its own distribution infrastructure; cross-system access required either physical transit of media carriers or ad hoc bilateral distribution agreements that rarely covered more than two systems. A coordinated platform built from Songjiang's network infrastructure position would consolidate access.
The founding investment built the technical infrastructure and the initial licensing relationships simultaneously. The first four years were spent building the archive rather than monetizing it — taking on losses to build catalogue depth before introducing subscription pricing. The model worked: when subscription pricing launched, the catalogue was large enough that the pricing was justified.
Operations
Catalogue: Approximately 4,200 titles across film, serial, music, and immersive media. The catalogue skews east reach but includes inward co-productions and purchases. Approximately 600 titles are original Hangang productions; the remainder are licensed from rights holders ranging from individual artists to production studios.
Licensing management: A team of twelve managing approximately 800 active licensing relationships across the catalogue. Agreements range from flat-fee licenses to revenue-share arrangements to long-term exclusivity contracts for major production relationships.
Archive function: Hangang operates a genuine preservation program for east reach cultural material at risk of loss — older works on degrading physical media, productions from systems without local preservation infrastructure. The preservation work is acknowledged as valuable by the cultural communities involved.
Distribution: East reach streaming platform, accessible across the corridor. Content is available offline-download for transit contexts where streaming bandwidth is unavailable. The service operates on a subscription model with tiered pricing.
Political Relationships
Hana Creative: Hana Creative is both a catalogue licensor and a visual design vendor to Hangang — it supplies motion design and interface visual work for the platform, and it licenses visual archive content to the platform's contextual packaging. The dual relationship means Hana has commercial interest in the platform's continued operation and visibility into platform licensing practices. Neither company has disclosed to the other that it has intellectual property arrangements with creators that have not been fully explained to those creators.
Open Corridor Stream: OCS is the inward streaming platform most directly competitive with Hangang's east reach service for content that crosses the corridor boundary. The two platforms have formal territorial divisions in some licensing agreements and informal competition in others. OCS's presence in east reach markets depends partly on the content that Hangang has not licensed exclusively — and Hangang's lapsed-agreement continuation model has kept content active on the platform that, if rights were renegotiated to OCS, would shift competitive balance.
Byeolbit Entertainment: Byeolbit is Hangang's largest content production partner and the studio whose original productions anchor the platform's premium subscription tier. The production relationship gives Byeolbit significant leverage over Hangang's content strategy and the platform's subscriber retention. Byeolbit is aware that Hangang's lapsed-agreement policy has kept some Byeolbit-adjacent catalogue active without current agreements, and has chosen not to raise this because the continued activity sustains audience engagement that benefits Byeolbit's brand.
What They Don't Talk About
Approximately 200 titles in Hangang's current active catalogue are being distributed under licensing agreements that have technically lapsed — the agreement term expired and renegotiation has been initiated but not completed. The platform continues streaming these works during the renegotiation period under an internal policy described as "good faith maintenance of distribution pending renewal."
The rights holders whose agreements have lapsed are not informed that their agreements have expired. They are not informed that their work is generating subscription revenue during the lapsed period. The renegotiation correspondence they receive asks them to consider updated terms; it does not note that the content is currently active without a valid agreement.
Hangang's standard service terms include a clause — agreed to by rights holders at initial onboarding — that permits continued distribution under the expired agreement's terms while active renegotiation is underway, and that deems the rights holder to have accepted any distribution revenue during the lapsed period as advance payment against the renewal agreement at the agreed rate. The rate that applies to the "advance payment" calculation is the rate the renegotiation arrives at — which, if the renegotiation results in lower rates than the expired agreement, means the rights holder's lapsed-period revenue is credited at below-expired-agreement rates.
Rights holders who sign the renewal agreement receive a credit note, not cash. Rights holders who decline the renewal discover the credit note applies to a service relationship they have just ended. The clause has survived the two legal challenges that have been filed against it.
Gameplay Relevance
Hangang Studio is media infrastructure in the east reach — the platform appears as a content source in common areas, residences, and transit accommodation, and its preservation archive is a reference resource for cultural investigation. A player researching east reach communities, organizations, or historical events may encounter Hangang's archive as a source of documentary material.
The lapsed-agreement revenue model is the investigative thread. The internal policy document exists. The list of titles in lapsed-agreement active distribution is a platform management record. The credit note accounting for rights holders who renegotiated or declined is in Hangang's financial records. A rights holder who has received a credit note rather than cash and is trying to understand the mechanism is a potential source who can point to the onboarding clause.
The archive function also gives Hangang cultural community relationships that make its staff potential sources on east reach creative industry dynamics.
The lapsed-agreement revenue model is particularly consequential for the estates of deceased artists — the rights holders least likely to be monitoring the platform's activity and most likely to have relied on a previous administrator's understanding of the agreement status. An estate executor who discovers that a family member's work has been generating revenue during a lapsed agreement period, and that the credit note they would receive is calculated at a renegotiated rate the estate never agreed to, faces a legal situation that is difficult to navigate from the outer reach without representation. Hangang's terms were designed for the platform's operational convenience; they produce outcomes for rights holders that a lawyer reviewing them on behalf of an estate would characterize differently than the platform's onboarding framing suggests. A player who can identify one such estate and help it understand its position has a source with standing, time, and motivation.
